De Jes\u00fas\/Houston Chronicle<\/p>\n<p>A new\u00a0Westheimer mural will honor six women who helped shape Houston, including Barbara Jordan, Ima Hogg, Terry Hershey and restaurateur Ninfa \u201cMama Ninfa\u201d Laurenzo.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewomenshome.org\/mural\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cFaces of Change: Her Story is Houston\u2019s Story&#8221; <\/a>is being painted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anatronen.com\/about.html\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Houston artist Anat Ronen<\/a>. A public unveiling is scheduled for Oct. 3 at 811 Westheimer Road in\u00a0Houston.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewomenshome.org\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Women\u2019s Home<\/a> commissioned Ronen to create \u201cFaces of Change: Her Story is Houston\u2019s Story,\u201d a 61-foot-by-20-foot mural celebrating six women selected by Houstonians for their influence on the city, according to the nonprofit. Mahjong night.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Houston honorees<\/p>\n<p>The honorees are women who opened doors, challenged convention, built Houston institutions and\u00a0created opportunities for future generations.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Charlotte Baldwin Allen \u2014 As the wife of Houston&#8217;s co-founder\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tshaonline.org\/handbook\/entries\/allen-augustus-chapman\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Augustus Chapman Allen<\/a>, she is considered the &#8220;Mother of Houston.&#8221; Her inheritance helped her husband and his brother\u00a0finance their early land speculation, including the purchase of land along Buffalo Bayou, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tshaonline.org\/handbook\/entries\/allen-charlotte-marie-baldwin\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Texas State Historical Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>She died in 1895 at age 93 and is buried in Houston&#8217;s\u00a0Glenwood Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Dominique de Menil \u2014 She helped build Houston&#8217;s international reputation in the arts and human rights. De Menil and her husband, John, established the Menil Foundation and\u00a0founded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menil.org\/founders\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Menil Collection. <\/a>She died at age 89 in\u00a01997.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Terry Hershey \u2014 In the 1960s, when plans threatened to channelize Buffalo Bayou, Hershey rallied Houstonians to protect its natural character and helped stop the project. One of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/news\/houston-texas\/houston\/article\/Environmentalist-who-saved-Buffalo-Bayou-dies-at-10870433.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">city&#8217;s noted <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/news\/houston-texas\/houston\/article\/Environmentalist-who-saved-Buffalo-Bayou-dies-at-10870433.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">conservationists<\/a>, she fought for the city&#8217;s natural spaces. Terry Hershey Park is named\u00a0for her. She died at age 94 in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Ima Hogg \u2014 She was a philanthropist and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tshaonline.org\/handbook\/entries\/hogg-ima\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">civic leader who helped shape Houston\u2019s\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tshaonline.org\/handbook\/entries\/hogg-ima\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cultural and civic institutions<\/a>. She helped establish the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens and the Houston Child Guidance Center.<\/p>\n<p>She died at age 93 in 1975. She also helped restore the Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historical Site near West Columbia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Barbara Jordan \u2014 She was the first Black woman <a href=\"https:\/\/history.house.gov\/People\/Detail\/16031\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">elected to the Texas Senate<\/a> and, in 1972,\u00a0the first Black woman elected to Congress from the South.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, she left Houston and the nation a legacy of courage, integrity, equality and principled leadership \u2014 and a powerful example of the responsibility that comes with having a voice,&#8221; according to the release. She died in 1996 at age 59.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Ninfa Rodr\u00edguez Laurenzo \u2014 Known as \u201cMama Ninfa,\u201d she changed Houston\u2019s culinary landscape\u00a0and became a prominent Latina entrepreneur.\u00a0She opened a small 10-table restaurant on Navigation Boulevard in 1973 and helped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/explained\/article\/ninfa-s-really-invent-fajitas-platter-looked-22377721.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">popularize fajitas<\/a> in Houston and beyond.
