If you didn\u2019t know the name Omar Courtz before Thursday night, the crowd inside Toyota Center offered a pretty good indication of why you might soon.<\/p>\n
The Puerto Rican singer brought his \u201cPor Si Ma\u00f1ana No Estoy USA Tour\u201d to Downtown Houston on Thursday, Aug. 27, drawing fans from Houston and across Texas for a night that felt much bigger than another stop on a national tour.<\/p>\n
I was there to see it for myself.<\/p>\n
And what happened between the relatively quiet scene outside the arena before the show and what I saw once Courtz took the stage surprised me.<\/p>\n
WHY SHOULD HOUSTON CARE ABOUT OMAR COURTZ?<\/p>\n
Start with Houston itself.<\/p>\n
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 44.2% of Houston residents identify as Hispanic or Latino.<\/p>\n
Houston\u2019s Latino community has roots stretching across Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Thursday night offered another example of how music brings many of those communities together.<\/p>\n
Courtz is Puerto Rican. The fans I met Thursday were not coming from one place.<\/p>\n
Some told me they traveled from San Antonio. Others came from Austin, Dallas and the Rio Grande Valley. Houston-area fans were there too.<\/p>\n
They all came to Downtown Houston for the same artist.<\/p>\n
For a 28-year-old performer still introducing himself to a broader American audience, filling the seats inside one of Houston\u2019s best-known arenas is significant.<\/p>\n

FROM PUERTO RICO TO TOYOTA CENTER<\/p>\n
Courtz, whose full name is Omar Courtz Maldonado, is from Carolina, Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n
His sound blends reggaeton, Latin R&B, trap, electronic music and Afrobeats.<\/p>\n
His rise has included collaborations with some of urbano\u2019s biggest names, including Daddy Yankee, J Balvin, Tainy, Myke Towers, Eladio Carri\u00f3n, \u00d1engo Flow and Dei V.<\/p>\n
And then there\u2019s Bad Bunny.<\/p>\n
Courtz joined Bad Bunny and Dei V on \u201cVeLD\u00c1,\u201d from Bad Bunny\u2019s \u201cDeB\u00cd TiRAR M\u00e1S FOToS.\u201d<\/p>\n
That collaboration introduced Courtz to an even larger international audience.<\/p>\n
But judging by the crowd Thursday night, plenty of people inside Toyota Center knew much more than the feature.<\/p>\n
They knew Omar Courtz.<\/p>\n
THE NUMBERS BEHIND HIS RISE<\/p>\n
His sophomore album, \u201cPor Si Ma\u00f1ana No Estoy,\u201d was released Feb. 19.<\/p>\n
The 18-track project debuted at No. 3 on Billboard\u2019s Top Latin Albums chart and No. 3 on its Latin Rhythm Albums chart.<\/p>\n
It also debuted at No. 5 on Billboard\u2019s Independent Albums chart.<\/p>\n
The album generated 26.6 million official U.S. streams during its opening tracking week.<\/p>\n
The project includes a mix of reggaeton, R&B, trap and Afrobeats, along with collaborations including Puerto Rican rapper \u00d1engo Flow.<\/p>\n
The tour supporting the album has placed Courtz in major U.S. markets, including Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago and Brooklyn.<\/p>\n
Houston\u2019s stop put him inside Toyota Center.<\/p>\n
RICKY\u2019S TAKE: I DIDN\u2019T EXPECT THIS<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve covered and attended hundreds of concerts over the years, so I thought I had a pretty good idea of what Thursday night would look like.<\/p>\n
I was wrong.<\/p>\n
When we first arrived at Toyota Center, the lines outside weren\u2019t particularly long.<\/p>\n
For an artist in the middle of a breakout moment, I expected to see people wrapped around the building.<\/p>\n
I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
And for a minute, I wondered what the crowd inside would look like.<\/p>\n
Then the concert started.<\/p>\n
Toyota Center was packed.<\/p>\n
From where I was sitting, seat after seat was filled. Fans were on their feet. And once Courtz walked onto the stage, the energy inside the building changed immediately.<\/p>\n
People weren\u2019t waiting for one recognizable hit.<\/p>\n
They were singing.<\/p>\n
Song after song.<\/p>\n
From the beginning of the concert through the end, people around the arena knew the words.<\/p>\n
And they rarely sat down.<\/p>\n

THE CROWD WAS PART OF THE SHOW<\/p>\n
That was what stood out to me most.<\/p>\n
The crowd didn\u2019t feel like people who bought tickets because they knew one viral song or one Bad Bunny collaboration.<\/p>\n
They came for Omar Courtz.<\/p>\n
People danced in the aisles and at their seats. They screamed the lyrics back at him. Phones went up across the arena whenever another recognizable song began.<\/p>\n
There was also a sense of pride.<\/p>\n
You could see it on Puerto Rican flags in the crowd and hear it when fans talked about watching another Puerto Rican artist reach a stage this size.<\/p>\n
But the audience wasn\u2019t coming only from Houston\u2019s Puerto Rican community.<\/p>\n
Fans told me they drove into Houston from across Texas, including San Antonio, Austin, Dallas and the Rio Grande Valley.<\/p>\n
That might have been the clearest indication of Courtz\u2019s growing reach.<\/p>\n
They traveled to Houston because this was the place to see him.<\/p>\n
ONE OF THE MOST ENERGETIC CROWDS I\u2019VE SEEN<\/p>\n
After hundreds of concerts, comparisons are inevitable.<\/p>\n
This crowd felt different.<\/p>\n
It wasn\u2019t necessarily about the biggest production or the biggest name I\u2019ve ever seen perform.<\/p>\n
It was the relationship between Courtz and the people watching him.<\/p>\n
For much of the night, the crowd never seemed to lose energy.<\/p>\n
There are concerts where people stand for the hits and sit through the rest.<\/p>\n
Thursday didn\u2019t feel like one of those nights.<\/p>\n
The people around me were invested from beginning to end.<\/p>\n
For an artist whose career is still growing in the United States, watching thousands of people sing his music back to him inside Toyota Center made his rise feel much less theoretical.<\/p>\n
Houston showed up.<\/p>\n
BEFORE THE MUSIC, THERE WAS TRACK AND FIELD<\/p>\n
Courtz\u2019s path to that stage didn\u2019t begin with music.<\/p>\n
Before his recording career took off, he competed in track and field in Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n
He received a scholarship to study mechanical engineering at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico and competed in the island\u2019s Liga Atl\u00e9tica Interuniversitaria.<\/p>\n
Eventually, music became his focus.<\/p>\n
Courtz began releasing music on SoundCloud in 2017 before gaining wider attention with \u201cEn Su Nota\u201d in 2020.<\/p>\n
His debut album, \u201cPrimera Musa,\u201d followed in 2024.<\/p>\n
Then came collaborations, bigger streaming numbers and \u201cPor Si Ma\u00f1ana No Estoy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Thursday night brought that story to Houston.<\/p>\n
WHAT THURSDAY NIGHT SAID ABOUT HOUSTON<\/p>\n
There\u2019s a bigger reason this concert matters locally.<\/p>\n
Houston is a major Latino city.<\/p>\n
Nearly half of its population identifies as Hispanic or Latino, and the audience for Spanish-language music is already here.<\/p>\n
Courtz didn\u2019t need an English-language crossover record to get thousands of people inside a major Houston arena singing along.<\/p>\n
He arrived singing the music that built his audience.<\/p>\n
And Houston knew the words.<\/p>\n
For Courtz, Thursday was another stop on a national tour.<\/p>\n
For Houston, it was another indication of the audience Latin music has built here and how far a new generation of artists is reaching.<\/p>\n
The quiet lines outside Toyota Center had me wondering what I was about to walk into.<\/p>\n
A few hours later, I had my answer.<\/p>\n
