UPDATE (5 PM) – Severe storms that swept through the San Antonio area overnight have left tens of thousands without power and prompted a citywide recovery effort focused on clearing hazards, restoring electricity and helping residents stay safe in the heat.<\/p>\n
The City of San Antonio and CPS Energy said crews have been working continuously throughout the storm and into Saturday to address safety threats and infrastructure damage. Officials said public safety and community support remain the top priority during recovery operations.<\/p>\n
CPS Energy said outage restoration will likely last several days as crews prioritize safety while working to restore power. As of 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, CPS Energy reported 653 outages impacting around 63,000 customers. The utility said it has 250 wire down orders and encouraged customers experiencing prolonged outages to implement emergency backup plans and seek alternative shelter if they are still without power.<\/p>\n

Residents can report non-emergency tree damage, blocked streets or general debris by calling 3-1-1 or 210-207-6000, or by emailing 311CustomerService@sanantonio.gov.<\/p>\n The city\u2019s Brush Collection Center at 1800 Wurzbach Parkway, 78216, will be open Sunday, Aug. 30, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., extending hours beyond its normal Sunday closure. The city said brush disposal fees are being waived this weekend for residents disposing of storm-related brush.<\/p>\n To help residents cope with rising temperatures during power outages, the city has opened six resilience hubs that will remain open overnight through 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30. The sites will provide basic needs and supplies, access to power and device charging, and free Wi-Fi. To report a downed power line, CPS Energy said to call 210-353-HELP (4357). Residents are also being asked to check on older adults and vulnerable neighbors. For life-safety emergencies, officials said to call 9-1-1 immediately.<\/p>\n The city is also asking residents to report damages and losses to residential, commercial and\/or agricultural property from the storm event on Friday, Aug. 28. Residents can submit a detailed self-assessment survey through the Individual State of Texas Assessment Tool, or iSTAT, in English or Spanish, limited to one survey per impacted address. VIA information is available at VIAInfo.net or 210-362-2020.<\/p>\n *******<\/p>\n SAN ANTONIO – Over 50,000 people remain without power as CPS Energy works to restore service after severe storms led to outages for over 100,000 customers.<\/p>\n Around 11 am on Saturday, officials with CPS Energy held a press conference to update the public on their recovery efforts as crews work to restore service to affected communities.<\/p>\n City officials confirmed that there were no fatalities as a result of the storms.s<\/p>\n San Antonio officials are urging patience as crews work to restore power and clear debris after a severe storm brought widespread damage, including downed trees and power lines, but no reported fatalities.<\/p>\n CPS Energy said the storm produced 23,000 cloud-to-cloud lightning strikes and knocked out electricity to about 112,000 customers at its peak. As of the latest update, just under 70,000 customers remained without power, with about 562 outages still active. Officials said roughly 250 downed power lines require attention, and the Five Points area has been identified as the epicenter of the damage, accounting for more than one-third of the total outages.<\/p>\n Interim CEO Frank Almedaz said lightning strikes damaged equipment, and officials reported significant infrastructure damage, including crushed poles caused by 60 mph winds. CPS Energy said restoration is expected to continue through the weekend and into early next week.
