In a previous interview with The Texas Tribune, he said that he was born in Denver, grew up in Mexico and had been living and working in Texas. He was deported, anyway. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security disputed his account and accused Morales of having entered the country illegally.

According to Morales’s lawyers, that changed as they provided more documents as part of a lawsuit challenging his removal. A congressional government watchdog found that immigration agents “arrested 674, detained 121, and removed 70 potential U.S. citizens” between 2015 and 2020, according to a July 2021 report.

An investigation from ProPublica found more than 170 U.S. citizens were detained by immigration agents in the first nine months of President Trump’s second administration.
