(Google images)

For nearly four decades, Crystals in Lubbock, Texas, stood as more than a nightclub and event center — it was a cornerstone of the West Texas Tejano music scene. From legendary performers like Selena, Emilio Navaira, and Little Joe y La Familia to countless emerging artists who took the stage in hopes of building their careers, Crystals became a place where musical history was made. Now, with the iconic venue at up for sale, Tejano Nation reflects on the venue’s remarkable legacy, the Dailey family’s dedication, and the personal impact Crystals had on my own journey as an artist.

After nearly four decades at 2407 E. Cornell Street, since its opening in March 1986, Crystals is now up for sale, bringing the story of one of Lubbock’s longtime entertainment landmarks to a close.

As a new Tejano artist who stood on that stage for my third live show ever, a Lubbock native and a friend to the Dailey family, it is fitting that I share this news of the closing of this historic chapter.

A Staple in Tejano History

There are buildings that serve a purpose, and there are buildings that become part of a community’s identity.

Crystals became the latter.

For generations, the venue served as a nightclub and later as Crystals Event Center, hosting concerts, weddings, quinceañeras, private celebrations and community gatherings. Its importance to Lubbock’s music scene, particularly Tejano music, extended far beyond entertainment.

Crystals became a place where touring artists could bring their music to West Texas and where local musicians could experience a professional stage, develop their craft and begin building their own audiences.

For generations, Crystal’s provided a stage for concerts, celebrations and community gatherings. (Courtesy: Google images)

A Stage for Legends

Over the decades, Crystals welcomed an extraordinary lineup of Tejano, Norteño and regional music legends, including Selena y Los Dinos, Laura Canales, Grupo Mazz, La Mafia, Sólido, Siggno, Intocable, Little Joe y La Familia, Los TexManiacs, Shelly Lares, Jay Perez, Emilio Navaira and Los Tigres del Norte, along with nationally recognized performers such as The Temptations and countless other artists who became part of Lubbock’s live music history.

For local audiences, those appearances carried significance. They demonstrated that Lubbock could attract major performers and gave West Texas fans a place to experience them close to home.

But the venue’s historical importance was not limited to the artists whose names appeared on its marquee. Some of its most meaningful stories came from the musicians who were still trying to establish themselves.

Selena Before the World Knew Her

On January 6, 1989, Selena Quintanilla-Perez performed at Crystals during her Dulce Amor Tour, supporting her 1988 album.

She was still years away from becoming the international figure she would eventually become. Roughly 100 people reportedly attended, which is striking because of what Selena would ultimately accomplish.

At the time, however, it was simply one performance by a young artist building her career.

Thirty-five years later, I found myself on that same stage performing to a crowd of around the same number.I was discouraged until Johnny walked up and told me about her story there. This made him a pillar in my resilience toward my career.

Johnny Dailey with Sammy Torres

But Johnny always created opportunities that would bridge the industry.

A perfect example of this is Chris “Sox” Calderon, who was a young sax player from Hale Center, Texas, who made a trip to Crystals to audition for Jay Perez. That opportunity led to seven years of touring with Perez and helped shape his career.

Today, Calderon serves as Music Director and Producer for Sammy Torres & The New Image, helping guide the next generation of Tejano music coming out of Lubbock and West Texas.

The Dailey Family’s Four Decades of Dedication

At the center of Crystals history is the Dailey family, led by Johnny Dailey and his late wife, Jewel Dailey.

Jewel and Johnny Dailey (Courtesy photo)

The family invested time, money and personal commitment into maintaining a venue that continued serving the Lubbock community through changing generations and an evolving entertainment industry.

Crystals eventually transitioned from a longtime nightclub into an event center, allowing the property to remain active as a place for concerts, weddings, quinceañeras, private events and other community gatherings.

Keeping a venue of this scale operating for so many years required more than ownership. It required persistence and a willingness to continue believing in the value of live entertainment. That commitment is a significant part of the legacy Johnny, Jewel and the Dailey family leave behind.

A Final Tejano Show That Never Happened

One of the final planned chapters in Crystals musical history was the Pre-Valentine’s Tejano Showdown, which was scheduled to feature Grupo Stampede and Sammy Torres & The New Image.

The event was intended to bring an established Tejano act and a newer West Texas band together on the same stage. A sudden roof issue, however, prevented the concert from taking place less than an hour before the doors were meant to open.

In retrospect, the cancellation carries a different weight. Another generation was preparing to perform at a venue that had spent decades providing opportunities to musicians, but that performance never became part of Crystals history.

Still, Crystals became part of the foundation supporting live music for generations.

An Opportunity for a New Owner

For anyone considering purchasing 2407 Cornell Street, the property represents both a commercial opportunity and a piece of Lubbock history.

It is listed for $1.3 million and encompasses approximately 18,750 square feet on 1.42 acres.

The facility includes a recently installed TPO roof, large dance floor and stage, DJ booth, seating for approximately 800 people, a stated capacity of up to 1,500 guests, two full-service bars, public restrooms, fireplaces, a ticket booth, office space and a separate storage building measuring approximately 36 by 23.7 feet.

The property also includes a transferable grandfathered liquor license, subject to applicable approvals.

The building may have a new owner, but the memories created at Crystal’s will remain part of Lubbock’s history. (Courtesy: Powell Group)

The End of an Era

Kevin Dailey, son of Johnny Dailey, stated that his father will be turning 80 on September 14. Though his legacy will always live within the walls of the venue, and due to separate business ventures, they have decided to pass it on with hopes that it falls into the right hands.

For me, Crystals will always represent something personal. It was one of the first stages where I began discovering what my own journey as an artist could become.

It was also the place where Johnny Dailey gave me a story about Selena that changed the way I understood my own difficult moments.

I will always remember his encouragement.

I will always remember the multitude of Grammy and Latin Grammy-winning artists that once stood where I stood. That deserves recognition.

Johnny and his family gave Lubbock nearly four decades of memories. They created opportunities for musicians, opened their doors to generations of families and helped maintain a place where live music could thrive.

For that, we are deeply grateful.

Crystals may eventually belong to someone new, but what the Dailey family built cannot simply be sold with the property.

The building may have a new chapter ahead.

The history will always belong to Lubbock and everyone who set foot on that stage.

About Sammy Torres

Sammy Torres is a rising Tejano artist from Lubbock, Texas, and a member of the next generation of musicians helping carry the sound of Tejano music forward in West Texas. Torres performs with Sammy Torres & The New Image and brings a personal connection to the Lubbock music community and its history.
