{"id":423455,"date":"2026-09-02T01:48:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-02T01:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/423455\/"},"modified":"2026-09-02T01:48:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T01:48:10","slug":"judge-grants-restraining-order-against-ncaa-in-atwell-case","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/423455\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge grants restraining order against NCAA in Atwell case"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) &#8211; A Lubbock County judge has sided with former Texas Tech guard Donovan Atwell in a lawsuit against the NCAA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">District Judge John Grace issued a temporary restraining order against the NCAA, saying Atwell would suffer irreparable harm if he\u2019s kept off the court this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The order blocks the NCAA from using its \u201cnew 5 for 5\u201d eligibility rule to stop Atwell from practicing or playing for Texas Tech, or from punishing Texas Tech if the school lets him play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Grace said Atwell is likely to win on his claims and that he cannot be fully paid back if he loses this season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Atwell can now join preseason workouts as the case moves forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">A hearing on a longer-term injunction is set for Sept. 11.
