{"id":423529,"date":"2026-09-02T03:24:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-02T03:24:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/423529\/"},"modified":"2026-09-02T03:24:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T03:24:10","slug":"robert-kinney-facing-murder-charge-in-death-of-stephon-jones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/423529\/","title":{"rendered":"Robert Kinney facing murder charge in death of Stephon Jones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) &#8211; A grand jury issued a formal murder charge against a man accused of killing another person in July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Robert Kinney told police multiple people showed up to his family\u2019s home in the middle of the night with his son.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Kinney said he got his gun and told investigators he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcbd.com\/2026\/07\/27\/affidavit-resident-fired-warning-shot-before-fatal-shooting-outside-lubbock-home\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.kcbd.com\/2026\/07\/27\/affidavit-resident-fired-warning-shot-before-fatal-shooting-outside-lubbock-home\/\">fired a warning shot into the air<\/a> and approached the vehicles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">That is when he said he saw his son unconscious in the backseat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Kinney said that when he went to wake his son up, 37-year-old Stephon Jones started hitting him in the face.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Kinney admitted to police he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcbd.com\/2026\/07\/27\/affidavit-resident-fired-warning-shot-before-fatal-shooting-outside-lubbock-home\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.kcbd.com\/2026\/07\/27\/affidavit-resident-fired-warning-shot-before-fatal-shooting-outside-lubbock-home\/\">knowingly squeezed the trigger during the altercation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Kinney\u2019s lawyers claimed he was protecting his home and his family.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 KCBD.
