SAN ANTONIO \u2013 Jesus \u201cJesse\u201d Salame<\/a> sat down with KSAT\u2019s Dillon Collier in his first one-on-one interview since being appointed San Antonio\u2019s next police chief.<\/p>\n

Salame was selected through a nationwide portal of applicants, City Manager Erik Walsh said in a news conference Wednesday afternoon. <\/p>\n

Salame, a 26-year veteran of the police department, formerly worked as a homicide detective, a spokesman, chief of staff and assistant police chief. <\/p>\n

Salame said every role he\u2019s worked had purpose and he believes he\u2019s the person to guide the department into the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is just the right moment,\u201d Salame said. \u201cThis department is evolving.\u201d<\/p>\n

Salame also recognized his predecessor, William McManus<\/a>, who was at the helm of the police department for 20 years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s an accomplishment that I don\u2019t think will ever be topped,\u201d Salame said. \u201cHis humbleness and ability to take feedback, to take criticism, was a real key component to our relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n

As chief, Salame said he wants to repair SAPD\u2019s relationship with the Bexar County District Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat relationship is really important,\u201d Salame said. \u201cThe downside of that relationship when it goes bad, is that people start to think there is no justice for them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Salame said he also sees himself taking a different approach when it comes to officer discipline. <\/p>\n

\u201cDiscipline is part of the job, and we have to do that well. That\u2019s an industry standard, but there are certain situations where we can set up and find teachable moments,\u201d Salame said. \u201cMistakes are not misconduct and we need to be able to tell the difference between the two.\u201d<\/p>\n
