{"id":425707,"date":"2026-09-04T03:36:27","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T03:36:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/425707\/"},"modified":"2026-09-04T03:36:27","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T03:36:27","slug":"trial-date-set-nearly-two-years-after-corpus-christi-mothers-killing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/425707\/","title":{"rendered":"Trial date set nearly two years after Corpus Christi mother\u2019s killing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Devaughan Williams is scheduled to stand trial Sept. 14 on a capital murder charge in the <a data-ylk=\"slk:2024 shooting death of Kiara Allani Smith;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kiiitv.com\/article\/news\/local\/roomate-calls-911-heard-shots-finds-woman-in-home\/503-47e0aa10-eba0-44c6-88c4-e64c36c27d6f\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">2024 shooting death of Kiara Allani Smith<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Williams appeared in court Thursday for a status hearing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Smith, the 25-year-old mother of Williams&#8217; child, was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound during the early morning hours of Sept. 6, 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Corpus Christi police responded to her apartment after other residents reported hearing gunshots and finding Smith&#8217;s body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Williams, who was 22 at the time, turned himself in at the Nueces County Sheriff&#8217;s Office around 4 p.m. that same day. He has remained in the Nueces County Jail since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Smith&#8217;s aunt, Bridget Dorsey, previously told 3NEWS that she had allowed Smith and Williams to stay at her home. Dorsey described the shooting as an act of domestic violence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Corpus Christi police also said the couple had a history of reported domestic violence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Williams was out on bail at the time of Smith&#8217;s death in connection with a December 2023 deadly conduct charge involving the discharge of a firearm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He also faces charges stemming from earlier alleged incidents involving Smith, including assault of a pregnant person in June 2023 and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in November 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Williams was initially charged with murder and later indicted on a capital murder charge.
