{"id":427029,"date":"2026-09-05T09:38:21","date_gmt":"2026-09-05T09:38:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/427029\/"},"modified":"2026-09-05T09:38:21","modified_gmt":"2026-09-05T09:38:21","slug":"the-last-critic-screens-at-the-texas-theatre-in-dallas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/427029\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018The Last Critic\u2019 screens at the Texas Theatre in Dallas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dallas<\/p>\n<p>Dallas\u2019 Texas Theatre rolled out the red carpet on Thursday, Sept. 3 for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelastcriticfilm.com\/\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Last Critic.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The documentary follows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.robertchristgau.com\/\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Christgau<\/a>, the self-proclaimed \u201cDean of American Rock Critics,\u201d that has been writing about music since the late 1960s for Esquire and The Village Voice. Christgau, who is in early 80s, is still writing today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Last Critic\u201d premiered earlier this spring at Austin\u2019s South by Southwest Film &amp; TV Festival, where it picked up the special jury prize for documentary feature. The film then played a little closer to home at the Oak Cliff Film Festival in July and won Best Documentary Feature.<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago, the Dallas Film Commission selected the documentary for its <a href=\"https:\/\/filmdallas.org\/screen-dallas\/\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Screen Dallas program<\/a>, which awards the film with a week-long theatrical release that qualifies it for Academy Award consideration.<\/p>\n<p>The program also includes a <a href=\"https:\/\/us.eventsforce.net\/rsnk7z\/413\/home?utm_source=social&amp;utm_medium=facebook&amp;utm_content=2319e1e5-e1e5-4952-a409-6f7f8cf101d1\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">free red carpet screening,<\/a> which was held on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, it was unthinkable,\u201d \u201cLast Critic\u201d director Matty Wishnow told the Star-Telegram on the carpet. \u201cIf you talked to me a month ago, this was not on my bingo card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>                                          <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/IMG_0354.JPG\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" title=\"IMG_0354.JPG\" alt=\"The Texas Theatre in Dallas hosted a screening for \u201cThe Last Critic\u201d on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026.\"\/>                                                                                    The Texas Theatre in Dallas hosted a screening for \u201cThe Last Critic\u201d on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026.                                                                                            Brayden Garcia                                                                            bgarcia@star-telegram.com                                                                                        \u2018The Last Critic\u2019 screens in Dallas<\/p>\n<p>Wishnow was joined at the screening by his \u201cLast Critic\u201d producers Ben Wu, Paul Lovelace and Joe Levy.<\/p>\n<p>The crew walked the red carpet and spoke with several media members about the film, which will screen multiple times a day from Sept. 11-17 at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studiomoviegrill.com\/locations\/texas\/spring-valley\/2026\/9\/3\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Studio Movie Grill Spring Valley<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Making the film made Wishnow rethink what the function of a critic is, especially in how Christgau describes what the two core totems of criticism are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Christgau] says, \u2018You have to know what you like, and you have to be able to explain why you like it, no matter how deplorable that rationale is,\u2019\u201d Wishnow said. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t say that I rethought the role of art, but I definitely wrestled with and got a much deeper understanding about what it means to be a critic and what the value of a music critic is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\ud83c\udfac In case you missed it: <\/p>\n<p>The Screen Dallas committee chose \u201cThe Last Critic\u201d because they thought it had the best chance to be shortlisted for an Academy Award, Dallas film commissioner Katie Schuck said.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Schuck said Christgau is a fascinating subject, and the film is well-shot and well-edited.
