Gov. Greg Abbott<\/a> (R-TX) announced on Sunday that he is running for reelection as Texas<\/a> governor, in what would be his fourth term should he win in 2026.<\/p>\n

Abbott, 67, made the announcement at a \u201cFuture of Texas\u201d event in Houston on Sunday evening, where he also unveiled his new campaign slogan, \u201cLet\u2019s Roll!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs Texans, we will defend this state with every fiber of our being. We will protect what we built, finish what we started, and lead Texas into its glorious future,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s why tonight, I\u2019m here to announce I am running for reelection as your governor for the great state of Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Abbott is focusing his reelection bid on continuing the \u201cTexas model,\u201d which include lower taxes, job creation, and border security.<\/p>\n

\u201cTexas is not just another state. It\u2019s our home. Our heritage. Texas is the heartbeat of this land we call America,\u201d he told supporters.<\/p>\n

His campaign also revealed a new property tax reform plan that is designed to rein in property taxes set by local governments.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s time to drive a stake through the heart of local property tax hikes for good,\u201d Abbott said. \u201cWe are going to turn the tables on local taxing authorities, put the power with the people, and put an end to out-of-control property taxes in Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Abbott has served as Texas governor since 2015. If he wins in 2026, he will become the longest-serving governor of the Lone Star State, surpassing Republican Rick Perry, who served in the governor\u2019s mansion for 15 years.<\/p>\n

SENATE FINDS PATH TO REOPEN GOVERNMENT, FUELING DEMOCRATIC SPLIT<\/a><\/p>\n

So far, Abbott would appear to be the clear favorite in the race. He has two Republican challengers, both with relatively little political background, as well as three Democratic challengers. Those include state Rep. Gina Hinojosa and Andrew White, son of former Texas Gov. Mark White.<\/p>\n

Abbott would also almost certainly have the backing of President Donald Trump<\/a>, who endorsed his last reelection campaign and spurred a contentious redistricting campaign in the state this year. That new congressional map was passed after state Democrats initially fled the state in protest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Gov.
