Police say the man had arrived at Memorial Hermann seeking help for suicidal thoughts before the late-night encounter<\/p>\n

HOUSTON \u2013 A man in his early 30s was shot three times by a hospital security officer Saturday night after authorities said he grabbed a knife inside the emergency room at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital at 921 Gessner Road.<\/p>\n

According to Houston police<\/a>, the man arrived around 6 p.m. seeking help and told staff he was suicidal. Hospital employees treated him and placed him in a secluded area of the emergency department.<\/p>\n

Shortly before 9 p.m., the man pulled out a knife. Security officers tried to restrain him and deployed three Tasers. He fell after the final Taser was used, and a security sergeant moved in to remove the weapon.<\/p>\n

Police said the man regained consciousness and grabbed the knife again. The sergeant then fired his weapon, striking the man in the torso.<\/p>\n

Medical personnel immediately began treating him. He was expected to be transferred to another hospital for additional care.<\/p>\n

Hospital staff recognized the man from previous visits for other medical issues. Police said they were not aware of any prior trouble involving him at the facility.<\/p>\n

The Houston Police Department is investigating.<\/p>\n
