AUSTIN, Texas – While Texas swelters in late summer heat, the almanacs are already looking ahead to the colder times to come.<\/p>\n

What we know:<\/p>\n

Both the Farmers\u2019 Almanac and the Old Farmer\u2019s Almanac have released their predictions for winter, and they aren\u2019t exactly in sync.<\/p>\n

Regardless of which prediction turns out to be true, El Ni\u00f1o will play a major role in the type of weather Texas gets this winter.<\/p>\n

What is the Old Farmer\u2019s Almanac predicting for Texas this winter? <\/p>\n

Texans who love the cold and snow may be out of luck this winter if The Old Farmer\u2019s Almanac<\/a> is to be believed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The publication that\u2019s been around since 1792, calls for a warmer and drier winter for the Lone Star State.<\/p>\n

What they’re saying:<\/p>\n

“There is a chance for snow in the new year, so keep an eye on the forecast!” the prognosticators at the almanac wrote.<\/p>\n

What is the Farmers\u2019 Almanac predicting for Texas this winter? <\/p>\n

The Farmers\u2019 Almanac<\/a> is calling for a stormy winter for Texas, with elevated flood and severe weather risks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

What they’re saying:<\/p>\n

“An active storm track may extend from Southern California and the Desert Southwest through Texas, the Gulf Coast, and the Southeast,” the prediction at the publication that started in 1818 read. “These areas should watch for frequent storm systems, muddy fields, and occasional surges of cold air.”<\/p>\n

How will El Ni\u00f1o impact Texas? <\/p>\n

Big picture view:<\/p>\n

El Ni\u00f1o is a periodic warming of the waters in the Pacific Ocean. It\u2019s part of the El Ni\u00f1o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) that sees warm, neutral and cool phases. It\u2019s called La Ni\u00f1a when its in the cool phase.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a near certainty that a very strong El Ni\u00f1o will influence the weather patterns for Texas during the fall and winter, according to NOAA.<\/p>\n

During typical El Ni\u00f1o winters, the southern jet stream gets more active. This usually means colder and wetter weather across the southern tier of the U.S.<\/p>\n

Local perspective:<\/p>\n

According to the National Integrated Drought Information System<\/a>, the last time a very strong El Ni\u00f1o was in charge of Texas\u2019 weather was in 2015-2016. It ended the intense drought from 2010-2015, but resulted in localized flooding.<\/p>\n
