And according to <a class=\"externallink\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cobuy.io\/blog\/cobuying-coowning-home-2026-report#numbers\">a yearly report by the housing co-ownership platform CoBuy,<\/a> the number of people who bought a home with someone they\u2019re not married to increased by 26% from 2021 to 2025. <\/p>\n<p>Ashley Ayala, an insurance appraiser living outside of Austin, Texas, is one of those co-owners. In February, <a title=\"\" class=\"interallink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/story\/2026\/02\/11\/sharing-the-cost-of-homeownership-with-a-friend\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">she bought a home with her best friend.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe house makes me so happy, and I get to have people over all the time,\u201d said Ayala. \u201cBut it&#8217;s expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarketplace\u201d host Kristin Schwab has <a title=\"\" class=\"interallink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/story\/2025\/11\/24\/how-economic-uncertainty-informs-big-life-decisions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">been talking to Ayala about her financial life<\/a> since early 2025, and spoke to her about her first seven months of homeownership.
