{"id":431951,"date":"2026-09-10T17:44:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T17:44:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/431951\/"},"modified":"2026-09-10T17:44:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T17:44:10","slug":"pearland-isd-partners-with-uthealth-houston-for-new-student-mental-health-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/431951\/","title":{"rendered":"Pearland ISD partners with UTHealth Houston for new student mental health program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Pearland ISD is partnering with UTHealth Houston on a new program designed to help students better understand mental health and encourage more open conversations about it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">The district\u2019s Board of Trustees approved the agreement with UTHealth Houston\u2019s Department of Psychiatry during its Sept. 8 meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">The program, called Youth Aware of Mental Health, or YAM, will give Pearland ISD students the opportunity to participate in five sessions, each lasting about 45 to 60 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>What is the YAM program?<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">UTHealth Houston\u2019s Risk and Resilience Network will lead the sessions, which are designed to increase mental health awareness among adolescents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">The program uses interactive lessons and activities focused on skills including:<\/p>\n<p>Problem-solving<\/p>\n<p>Emotional intelligence<\/p>\n<p>Self-awareness<\/p>\n<p>Empathy<\/p>\n<p>Listening<\/p>\n<p>Understanding different perspectives<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">UTHealth Houston will provide the program materials, as well as a YAM facilitator and an assistant.<\/p>\n<p>No cost to Pearland ISD<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">According to district documents, the partnership will have no financial impact on Pearland ISD.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">The agreement will remain in effect through the end of June 2028.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">Pearland ISD already offers mental health resources for students, including student support counselors at its junior high and high school campuses, along with counseling and crisis-response services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf jbiTJv kYFPaL article-text\">The new partnership adds another opportunity for students to learn about mental health, build coping and communication skills and have conversations about issues they may be experiencing.<\/p>\n<p>Breaking News Alerts<img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" role=\"presentation\"  style=\"object-fit:cover;width:234px;height:50px\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1789062250_713_kprc_breaking.png\" width=\"234\" height=\"50\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-dLMFU sc-fHjqPf eUxjKG\">More Stories Like This In Our Email Newsletter<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 by KPRC Click2Houston &#8211;
