At the Republican Midterm Convention Wednesday in Dallas,\u00a0President Donald Trump<\/a> promised every American a $5,000<\/a> payment if Republicans retain control of the House and Senate in November’s midterm elections<\/a>\u2014a proposal that raises logistical questions, including how the estimated $1 trillion cost would be covered.<\/p>\n But beyond those questions is another: Could $5,000 actually change your mind at the ballot box?\u00a0Chron asked Houston area residents for their opinions on Nextdoor, and the responses were blunt. By Thursday morning, the posts had drawn more than 160 comments \u2026 and counting<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n (Responses may have been lightly edited for grammar and readability.)<\/p>\n ‘Not the American way’<\/p>\n Many commenters viewed the proposal negatively, with some calling it a bribe.\u00a0<\/p>\n “He is trying to buy your vote but it’s the law and not the American way,” Joe Goana, a resident of Pecan Villa wrote.\u00a0<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n Tiffany Huff, a resident of Red Bluff, said the promise was a “HUGE no.”\u00a0<\/p>\n “Buying votes instead of earning them is enough of a red flag,” wrote. “Especially in a time when people are financially struggling BECAUSE of him.”<\/p>\n Others poked fun at what they described as yet another Trump promise after others that have yet to materialize.<\/p>\n “Ha! Like all the other checks he’s ‘promised’ \u2026 tarrif refunds, doge cut refunds, TSA and ATC bonuses \u2026 etc.,” Mike H. of Champions Park wrote. “So no. Some said they strongly supported him and planned to vote for him anyway, whether or not the payment was a reality.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n “No, I was going to vote for him regardless!” Robert Meyer of\u00a0Deerfield Village wrote. “He has really helped protect America. Best president we’ve had no matter how many people despise him. Go MAGA!”<\/p>\n Colleen\u00a0Lyman of Mission West said the proposal made no difference.<\/p>\n “I will vote for Republican candidates,”\u00a0Lyman wrote.<\/p>\n ‘At least with 5K I can pay off some bills’<\/p>\n Not everyone rejected the proposal outright. Some took a more transactional view, saying they might as well accept the money if it becomes available.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n Cheryl\u00a0Adeoye of Wimbledon Country took a more cynical view of the political system, saying she might as well take the money.
