September is not where this festival usually lives. Its true home is April, smack in the middle of Dallas Arts Month. Spring rain and a scheduling tangle with FIFA-related projects pushed it to fall this time around. However, the organizers are already locked in for a return to April in 2027.

The people steering the ship are Frankie Garcia III, the festival’s owner and chief experience developer; Christian Chavarría, executive director of music; and Jonathan Camacho, executive director of music operations. They talk about the festival less like promoters and more like people trying to prove a point about their city.

“The vision has always been to grow it into a much larger platform,” Garcia tells us. “We want this to be a free, community-based festival for our community, by our community.”

Sign up for the Music newsletter to get the latest stories delivered to your inbox

THANK YOU!

You’re all set.

CLOSE

The word “curated” comes up a lot among the trio.

“We take that responsibility seriously,” Garcia adds. “We want this thing to make sense from beginning to end.”

DDAMF’s “LIVE Walls” transform Main Street Garden Park into a vibrant escape.

For Camacho, the whole thing starts with geography and pride.

“Dallas is such a diverse city,” he says. “We wanted to create a moment for Dallas to be able to celebrate that.”

Chavarría, meanwhile, gets granular about how the lineup actually comes together, as it’s more like a jury deliberation than a booking email.

“We have a voting system without anyone speaking to each other. Then, we tally up the votes, and we try to curate a very balanced and versatile lineup, so that everyone and every culture can be represented,” Chavarría says.

Being out in the clubs and rooms across the area is the whole job, he says.

“Because we’re always out and about, we know the Dallas music scene.” Chavarría tells us. “At the heart of who we are, we are artist developers and culture developers now.”

The music is 100% local (with one loving exception)

The lineup is built entirely from DFW talent, which is either a constraint or a flex depending on how well you know the scene. The organizers clearly consider it the latter. Camacho is so confident in the curation that he’ll tell you the running order barely matters.

“Even if we were to switch a 2 p.m. band with a 5 p.m. band, the level of excellence is still going to be there,” he says. “They’re going to understand the assignments.”

The one artist arriving from out of town still counts as one of Dallas’ own: Lebanese American multilingual singer-songwriter Dona Maria who performs on Saturday. She splits her time between Dallas and Los Angeles and has deep roots here. Chavarría says she is donating her performance fee to charity.

Watching art happen in real time

The visual side is where DDAMF really shows off. The “LIVE Walls” activation puts nine artists — Honest, Bwaresparks, Kema, Raytrill, JoeSkilz, Sergio Garcia, TEX, Soner and Adalyn Marie Arce — to work on 8-by-12-foot pop-up walls, painting in real time across both days. Add a standard Tuff Shed set to be transformed into a one-off painted installation alongside the mobile art activation from Box Truck Galleries, and the park essentially becomes an open-air gallery you can watch come to life.

Education is baked in, too. The Dallas College School of Creative Arts, Entertainment and Design brings student and faculty pop-ups, while UT Dallas is running up to 50 students through a hands-on festival management volunteer program. Future organizers, in training.

Where this is all headed

Ask about the endgame and the answers get ambitious. The April 2027 return will reportedly include a one-to-two-day educational panel featuring speakers from the University of North Texas’ music business department alongside high-level local producers. Zoom out further and Chavarría describes a platform that eventually folds in every expressive form of art Dallas has to offer — a homegrown, South by Southwest-style cultural footprint with its own distinctly Dallas flavor.

Garcia frames the stakes plainly. It’s about “tapping into that talent, creating something that’s worthy, that has value, not just monetary, but value in regards to what it’s doing for the community. That’s really what this is about.”

September may be the away game. But if these four days land the way the organizers intend, 2027 will be the start of something Dallas has been waiting on. Mark it down.

The schedule

The festival opens with two nights at SPACE at Adolphus Tower (1412 Main St.) before spilling into the park:

Thursday, Sept. 10 — DDAMF VIP Celebration, 6-9 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 11 — Dallas College CROSSOVER Launch Event, 6-9 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 12 — Festival Day 1 at Main Street Garden Park (1902 Main St.), noon-10 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 13 — Festival Day 2 at Main Street Garden Park, noon-6 p.m.

Both weekend days are free and family- and pet-friendly.

For full schedule details, the complete music lineup and registration, visit DDAMF.com.
