LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – While the Coronado Mustangs will look to build on last week\u2019s 21-10 victory over Lubbock High, which ended a lengthy losing streak, the Frenship Memorial Panthers will try to gain their first win in varsity competition. <\/p>\n
\u201cOur kids are playing with some confidence. They\u2019re playing pretty good, and so it was good to see them have some success,\u201d said Coronado head football coach Andrew Roy. <\/p>\n
One reason for the Mustangs\u2019 turnaround has been the tandem of quarterback David Bawcum and wide receiver Rebel Beckam, otherwise known as \u201cBawcum to Beckham\u201d. <\/p>\n
The two schools play in adjacent school districts. While Coronado\u2019s area occupies the western region of Lubbock ISD schools, Memorial now in its second season, is in the eastern area of Frenship ISD. <\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t have to say a lot to get them motivated. A lot of these kids know each other, they border our school district, our attendance zone and so there\u2019s going to be some friendly rivalry going on.\u201d <\/p>\n
Even though the Panthers have been winless in their first two games, their two losses have come to Lubbock-Cooper Liberty and West Plains, which have been two of the most dominant teams in the area. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe way I was raised is you play tough non-district games to prepare for district, and we\u2019ve definitely done that. We can definitely play better, we\u2019ve had a great week of practice, and we look forward to Friday night.\u201d he said, while speaking complimentary of Coronado. <\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re much improved, they do a really good job offensively. They get the ball out, get the ball to their athletes defensively. They\u2019re very sound in what they do and it\u2019s going to be a great challenge.\u201d <\/p>\n
