SAN ANTONIO \u2014 A 22-year-old University of\u00a0Texas at San\u00a0Antonio student says\u00a0she is lucky\u00a0to be alive\u00a0after a violent\u00a0hit-and-run\u00a0crash sent her\u00a0vehicle flying off\u00a0Highway 151 and\u00a0left her scrambling\u00a0to escape an\u00a0overturned car.<\/p>\n

Delgado said traffic\u00a0was slowing as\u00a0vehicles approached the\u00a0exit when she\u00a0saw the headlights\u00a0of a white\u00a0truck approaching rapidly\u00a0from\u00a0behind.<\/p>\n
\u201cI ran myself\u00a0off the road\u00a0a little bit\u00a0to give it\u00a0room because I\u00a0thought that it\u00a0was trying to\u00a0pass me,\u201d Delgado\u00a0said.<\/p>\n
Instead,\u00a0she said, the\u00a0truck slammed into\u00a0her vehicle.<\/p>\n
The impact pushed\u00a0Delgado\u2019s car into\u00a0the vehicle in\u00a0front of her\u00a0before her\u00a0car struck a\u00a0guardrail and went\u00a0off the highway.<\/p>\n
\u201cI spun in\u00a0the air, and\u00a0when the car\u00a0finally landed, it\u00a0was upside down,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Delgado\u00a0said she was\u00a0restrained by her\u00a0seat belt and\u00a0feared the vehicle\u00a0could catch fire. Her driver\u2019s-side\u00a0window was closed, but\u00a0the passenger-side\u00a0window had shattered\u00a0during the crash.<\/p>\n
She said she\u00a0crawled out through\u00a0the broken window.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just remember\u00a0crawling my way\u00a0out from under\u00a0the seat belt,\u201d Delgado said. \u201cI\u00a0just\u00a0remember thinking, like, ‘I cannot die\u00a0right now.’\u201d<\/p>\n
After escaping the vehicle, Delgado said she found herself alone on the side of the highway. She said the truck that hit her had left the scene and that the other vehicle involved in the crash also did not stop.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had to\u00a0wave down and\u00a0scream for\u00a0people to help,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Someone eventually stopped and called for emergency responders. Delgado was taken to the emergency room.<\/p>\n
Doctors determined she\u00a0had no broken\u00a0bones, but Delgado\u00a0said she suffered\u00a0extensive bruising, swelling\u00a0and open wounds, particularly on the\u00a0right side of\u00a0her body.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have some\u00a0bruising right here\u00a0on my face\u00a0from the steering\u00a0wheel,\u201d she said. \u201cThe right side\u00a0of my body\u00a0is scraped up.\u201d<\/p>\n
Delgado, who hopes to become a lawyer, said the crash has created financial challenges in addition to her injuries.<\/p>\n
She works two\u00a0jobs to help\u00a0pay for school\u00a0and said she\u00a0used her savings\u00a0to pay her\u00a0tuition in August. She said she\u00a0was unable to\u00a0make her car\u00a0insurance payment\u00a0that month.<\/p>\n
\u201cTwo weeks ago, I used every\u00a0last cent in\u00a0there to pay\u00a0my tuition,\u201d Delgado\u00a0said. \u201cI thought, you know, what\u2019s\u00a0one month without\u00a0insurance?\u201d<\/p>\n
She said she\u00a0still\u00a0owes about $2,000\u00a0on the vehicle\u00a0and now needs\u00a0to find a\u00a0way to replace\u00a0it.<\/p>\n
