Originally from New York state, I lived in Houston for many years before moving here in 2019 after retiring from nursing.

My son and his wife had moved to nearby Ryan Place in 2016, so I had visited the neighborhood many times. I liked the feel of the area with its old homes, mature trees and walkability. Yard signs suggested it’s welcoming and inclusive.

I was thrilled when a turn-of-the-century Craftsman bungalow came on the market. A couple had lovingly restored it from near ruin while honoring its period style, inside and out. I bought the place and began getting acquainted with the neighborhood, although it would be several months before I could retire and move.

I learned about the Fairmount Community Garden, the street festivals on Magnolia Avenue, such as Open Streets and ArtsGoggle, and the annual Tour of Historic Homes. I joined the Fairmount Neighborhood Association before moving so I could start getting involved.

In the seven years I have lived in Fairmount, I have been pleased by its neighborliness, especially among those active on the Fairmount Facebook page. The neighborhood is mostly as inclusive and welcoming as I expected. Whenever someone asks for help or a service referral, neighbors are quick to respond. Once, I asked the Facebook group whether anyone had a wheelchair I could borrow. Within half an hour, one was on my porch.

Fairmount has a number of little free libraries, including one that also offers food pantry items. The neighborhood association organizes many community activities. Volunteering on the board has deepened my sense of belonging. As a Unitarian Universalist, I’m also glad to have a church just a few blocks from home.

Other activities that fill my retirement include working on environmental issues with the Greater Fort Worth Sierra Club, part of one of the country’s oldest conservation organizations. A neighbor invited me to join the Fort Worth Newcomers Club, which offers many activities. TCU’s Silver Frogs lifelong learning program gives me another way to stay active.

I appreciate living close to TCU, the Fort Worth Zoo, the museum district and medical facilities. Of course, I also love being just a mile from my family, including my two grandsons.

Also, people often ask me how I like Fort Worth compared to Houston. For me, the biggest advantage is simple: no hurricanes!

Barbara Crotty has lived in Fairmount Historic District since 2019.

Fairmount Historic District

Total population: 3,354
Female: 48% | Male: 52%

Age
0-9: 18.6%
10-19: 6.8%
20-29: 11.5%
30-39: 22.9%
40-49: 10.1%
50-59: 10.4%
60-69: 10.1%
70-79: 8.2%
80 and older: 1.4%

Education
No degree: 15.6%
High school: 9.7%
Some college: 16.3%
Bachelor’s degree: 37.8%
Post-graduate: 20.5%

Race
White: 69.5% | Hispanic: 26.9% | Black: .1% | Two or more: 3%

Click on the link to view the schools’ Texas Education Agency ratings:

This article first appeared on Fort Worth Report and is republished here under a Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License.

by The FWR Staff, Fort Worth Report September 12, 2026 By Barbara Crotty I’m happy to say that…

[10
116,118,117,3151
post-434785","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-fort-worth","tag-fort-worth","tag-fort-worth-headlines","tag-fort-worth-news","tag-where-i-live
["GET
