Three Dallas-area high school students are turning a personal connection to wildfires into a way to support local first responders.

The students started the nonprofit Fire Line Fund after Sebastian Lee and his brother, Max Lee, saw the impact California wildfires had on their grandparents, who lost their home and nearly all of their belongings.

The students wanted to find a way to support the firefighters who help families during disasters. They created the non profit Fire Line Fund Dallas to support firefighters in the North Texas area and beyond.

Their efforts led them to Dallas Fire-Rescue and Box 4 Fire Buff Association, a volunteer-run nonprofit that provides rehabilitation and logistical support to firefighters and other first responders at major incidents. Box 4’s volunteers bring supplies including water, sports drinks, food, chairs, cooling equipment and heaters to crews working extended scenes.

The connection also has roots at St. Mark’s School of Texas. Dallas Fire-Rescue Deputy Chief Christian Hinojosa and a Box 4 Brett Willard are St. Mark’s alumni, while one of the students involved with Fire Line Fund currently attends the school. Hinojosa said conversations between the groups eventually grew into meetings and planning sessions that brought the organizations together.

The students have raised $1,500 so far and presented the money to Box 4. The organization does not receive direct funding from the city and relies on donations to help purchase supplies and equipment used to support first responders.

Hinojosa said he hopes the students’ work inspires other young people to find causes that are meaningful to them and look for ways to serve their own communities.
