Traffic headaches will be in full swing this week because another major highway closure<\/a> is planned for San Antonio. Drivers should prepare for delays near the Rim and UT San Antonio, which could last for months.<\/p>\n

Beginning Monday, September 14, at 5 a.m., the eastbound (EB) I-10 entrance ramp south of the Loop 1604 interchange will be permanently shut down, the agency said in a press release. The closure may affect travelers leaving The Shops at La Cantera or those\u00a0heading toward UTSA Boulevard.<\/p>\n

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) expects to open a new exit ramp later this year. For now, though, officials say this closure is necessary so crews can complete future roadway improvements.<\/p>\n

From the EB I-10 frontage road: Continue on the\u00a0frontage road through the UTSA Boulevard and Hausman Road intersections, TxDOT says. Then,\u00a0enter the EB I-10 main lanes via the entrance ramp south of Hausman Road.<\/p>\n

From the EB Loop 1604 frontage road: Use the EB to westbound (WB) Loop 1604 U-turn at the I-10 interchange, then enter the WB Loop 1604 frontage road, the agency says. Follow the WB Loop 1604 frontage road to the U-turn at Kyle Seale Parkway, then enter the EB Loop 1604 frontage road. Take the first entrance ramp onto the\u00a0EB Loop 1604 mainlanes and keep right to access\u00a0EB I-10 via the flyover ramp.<\/p>\n

From WB Loop 1604 to EB I-10: TxDOT recommends commuters follow the\u00a0EB Loop 1604 frontage road through the I-10 interchange to the U-turn at Northwest Military Highway, then enter the WB Loop 1604 frontage road. Take\u00a0the first entrance ramp to get on the\u00a0WB Loop 1604 main lanes and stay right to take the flyover ramp to access EB I-10.<\/p>\n

This week’s shutdown is part of the Loop 1604 North Expansion Project \u2014 a $1.4 billion initiative that involves road improvements to 23 miles from SH 16 (Bandera Rd.) to I-35. The goal is to “increase mobility, reduce congestion and enhance safety on one of the most congested corridors in the state,” per TxDOT.<\/p>\n

The Texas Transportation Commission considers it part of the Texas Clear Lanes initiative, which aims to improve travel along the most congested corridors in the state.
