A police chase took off from a “parking lot takeover” in north Houston and\u00a0ended in a fatal crash on Ella Boulevard overnight, according\u00a0to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.<\/p>\n
A sheriff’s office patrol unit responded to a parking lot where vehicles were doing donuts near Veterans Memorial Drive and FM 1960 at around 11:05\u00a0p.m., \u00a0HCSO Capt. Albers said in a briefing filmed by OnScene TV. A vehicle fled onto FM 1960\u00a0when the unit tried intervening with a traffic stop, according to Albers.<\/p>\n
The fleeing vehicle drove eastbound on FM 1960 and turned south on Ella Boulevard before striking a curb and losing control at a high rate of speed,\u00a0Albers said. The vehicle had turned off its headlights, failed to drive in a single lane and likely didn’t see the median’s curb, he added. <\/p>\n
Albers described the vehicle somersaulting in the crash, which occurred in the area of the 16500 block of Ella Boulevard.<\/p>\n
“The vehicle ended up turning over, rotating onto its roof and then its side and then back onto its regular standing up position,” he said.<\/p>\n
Of five people inside the vehicle at the time, one was pronounced dead at the scene, three were transported to a hospital and another fled on foot. The person who died and most if not all of the others are juveniles,\u00a0Albers said. Some firearms were found inside the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.<\/p>\n
An investigation was underway at the hospital to determine the driver’s identity, Albers said.
