There’s only a small, faded sign mounted on the corner to identify it, but the tiny food stand has made a big name for itself as one of Houston’s most beloved burger joints. That spot is Cream Burger at 3481 Elgin St. As it approaches its 65th year in business, that doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon.

Like many roadside eateries, Cream Burger is built for a quick stop, with a walk-up ordering window offering the only glimpse into the kitchen. Even with little parking and even fewer tables, it doesn’t leave much room to linger. But when I grabbed a late lunch on a random weekday, I got to see the restaurant’s legacy play out in real time as I stuck around to eat my food: customers hurried over for a quick bite, some waited in their cars with the air conditioning running, and others were so eager to dig into their meals right under the awning that the Houston heat hardly seemed to matter.

If the name doesn’t give it away, Cream Burger is known for its burgers—from hamburgers and cheeseburgers to chili burgers, which can be piled with classic toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, onions and bacon.

But burgers aren’t all that’s on the menu. Cream Burger also serves made-to-order hot dogs, chili dogs and chili cheese dogs, along with sides such as chips, fries and Frito pies plus dessert for anyone looking to finish the meal with something sweet, like a creamy cup of an ice cream sundae drizzled in strawberry or chocolate syrup. And everything is just under $9.

The menu is simple, and so are the prices—but neither comes at the expense of flavor. Cream Burger’s meals are made to order with fresh ingredients, making the food just as delicious as it smells when you walk up to grab your brown paper bag stuffed with your order.

Cream Burger opened in the Third Ward neighborhood in 1961, marking itself as one of the oldest restaurants in the area. This September, the family-owned restaurant will be celebrating 65 years of serving classic burgers, fries and shakes to generations of Houstonians. Still operating in the same space with many of the same menu offerings decades later, Cream Burger remains a reminder that, in a city where restaurants come and go, sometimes less really is more.

The traffic may keep moving through Third Ward, but the sizzling scent of freshly grilled burgers has been…

[7
1703,1704,56,58,57
post-435559","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-houston","tag-chronfood","tag-chronstaff","tag-houston","tag-houston-headlines","tag-houston-news
["GET
