A massive federal building in downtown Fort Worth is officially on the chopping block as the U.S. government moves to shrink its real estate footprint.<\/a><\/p>\n

The U.S. General Services Administration <\/a>announced plans to dispose of the Fritz G. Lanham Federal Building and an adjacent federal parking garage, saying the properties no longer fit the agency’s evolving real estate needs.<\/p>\n

The 669,264-square-foot building at 819 Taylor St. sits just west of the Fort Worth Convention Center. The adjacent garage is at 401 Texas St.<\/p>\n

The building opened in 1966 and houses several federal agencies, including the Social Security Administration, Internal Revenue Service and National Labor Relations Board.<\/p>\n

The GSA says the Fort Worth properties are the latest in a push to move underused or costly federal buildings out of its portfolio.<\/p>\n

“The federal government’s real estate portfolio must evolve with mission demands, workforce needs, and taxpayer expectations,” GSA Administrator Edward C. Forst said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The agency says the Fort Worth disposition is part of a move toward a shared-campus model for federal workplaces, with resources focused on properties that better support agency missions.<\/p>\n

A massive federal real estate sell-off<\/p>\n

The Fort Worth property is part of a much broader effort by the GSA to reduce the federal government’s real estate footprint.<\/p>\n

The agency says it has disposed of more than 127 properties since January 2025, generating $614 million in proceeds and avoiding $1.15 billion in delinquent maintenance and operating expenses.<\/p>\n

GSA also says it has eliminated more than $1 billion in costs through lease negotiations and reductions.<\/p>\n

The agency previously identified hundreds of federal properties for potential disposal, including several others in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.<\/p>\n

GSA says it has also identified additional buildings for accelerated disposal, estimating that moving those properties out of the federal portfolio could eliminate $2.7 billion in delinquent maintenance and annual operating costs.<\/p>\n

The timing and terms of a potential sale were not immediately detailed by GSA.<\/p>\n
