This September, during Suicide Prevention Month, two San Antonio veterans are speaking out about something many in the military are taught never to do: ask for help.

“Mental health is such a personal and critical feeling, so we want to hide it, right? We want to keep it to ourselves and say, look, I’m ok, when you’re really not ok,” said Steven Price, an Army veteran and co-founder of Voices of Our Veterans.

Price says nine of his personal friends in the military have died by suicide, and he’s determined to break the silence.

When asked what he hopes a veteran can remember at their lowest point, Price said, they’re not alone.

“I guess, you know, that they’re never left behind by us, by the veteran. The American GI Forum National Veterans Outreach Program offers services to help veterans file disability claims, find housing or search for employment, all at no cost.

“I can do all of these things for them, they don’t have to go out and pay for it or figure out what their next steps are — they need to come to an organization like mine,” said Sergio Dickerson, president and CEO of the American GI Forum National Veterans Outreach Program.

Getting connected is easier than most veterans might think.

“Just walk in. You don’t have to make an appointment,” Dickerson said.

Nationally, the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) says it is committed to ending the crisis, and it starts with connection.

“For us, it means connecting warriors and their family members to programs and services at no cost,” Lindsey Gray, with WWP said. “But also to promote protection. That’s things like connection and purpose that can be really difficult after a service member transitions out away from the military, especially in that first year.”

If you need help right now, the Veterans Crisis Line is staffed by veterans, for veterans, 24 hours a day.
