A man suspected of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend in Plano fired at law enforcement officers during a chase on Interstate 35 before crashing into a median and dying<\/a> Monday, authorities said Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The Texas Department of Public Safety said troopers were helping Plano police and the U.S. Marshals Service stop a Dodge Charger driven by the suspect about 9:50 a.m. Monday on northbound I-35 near Sanger.<\/p>\n

The driver refused to stop and kept driving, leading officers on a chase north, DPS said. During the pursuit, the suspect fired toward the officers.<\/p>\n

The chase ended near the Denton-Cooke county line<\/a> when the Charger crashed into the center median. The car caught fire soon after and firefighters later extinguished the flames.<\/p>\n

Police on Tuesday identified the man as William Ralph Gundy, 31, of Dallas. The woman was identified as Tashley Gateley, 32, of Plano.<\/p>\n

Gundy died at the scene, officials have said. No law enforcement officers were injured, DPS said.<\/p>\n

The Texas Rangers are investigating the chase and crash, according to DPS.<\/p>\n

Plano police spokesman Jerry Minton said Tuesday that the woman who was killed and the suspect had previously been in a relationship.<\/p>\n

The investigation into the woman’s death began around 10:15 p.m. Sunday, when Plano police and firefighters were called to a home in the 1100 block of Lakestream Drive.<\/p>\n

Officers found Gateley<\/p>\n

with multiple gunshot wounds. Plano Fire-Rescue pronounced her dead at the scene.<\/p>\n

Other family members were inside the home but were not injured, police said. The suspected shooter left before officers arrived.<\/p>\n

Police said the shooting appeared to be an isolated incident with no threat to the public.<\/p>\n

Minton previously told The Dallas Morning News that Plano detectives later located a vehicle connected to the suspect and set up surveillance on it. When the vehicle began moving Monday morning, Plano police asked DPS for help.<\/p>\n

Monday’s chase and crash shut down I-35 in both directions for several hours. Southbound lanes reopened shortly after noon, and northbound lanes reopened shortly after 2 p.m.<\/p>\n
