The Plano Balloon Festival is expected to see thousands of visitors from Sept. 17-20.

Here’s what visitors should know ahead of the event.

The gist

Visitors are advised to avoid Spring Creek Parkway while the festival, scheduled at Red Tail Pavilion, takes place because of traffic. The street will also be closed to drivers between Jupiter Road and Parker Road.

Drivers are recommended to take alternate routes from North Central Expressway and follow event signs for the nearest parking lot, per the festival website.

The festival’s fireworks show has been replaced by a new laser show due to the current burn ban in Collin County. The show will provide a nighttime production while also prioritizing safety, per a festival news release.

Fire-Rescue Public Information Officer Allison Smith said the festival canceled its fireworks show in 2023, as well. She said current fires like the Ross Fire west of Fort Worth show a need for precaution.

“Conditions are dry, and it doesn’t take much to spark a wildfire. Given the high fire threat, canceling the [fireworks] show is the responsible decision—not only to reduce the risk of another fire, but also to conserve resources,” Smith said.

The laser show will bring light, movement and music together for a visual experience at the festival, according to its website.

Quote of note

Plano Mayor John Muns provided an official proclamation for the festival at a city council meeting Sept. 14.

“Plano’s passion for hot air balloons has soared. Residents of all ages and visitors near and far continue to be captivated by the colorful balloons that fill the autumn skies,” Muns said.

The background

Plano Balloon Festival first started in 1979, Muns said, and provides attractions, entertainment, photo opportunities and more according to the festival website. The festival provides non-profit agencies with an avenue to raise funds and awareness for their programs and services through volunteer opportunities, food sales and vendor stations.

The Plano Balloon Festival is expected to see thousands of visitors from Sept. 17-20.
