During the vote to decide how many polling locations would be used for the Nov. 3 midterm election, the two were on opposing sides for the nth time.

Initially, the entire Commissioners Court agreed a proposed near-halve of voting sites was too deep a cut. On Sept. 1, the Republican and Democrat disagreed on the new list of polling locations, which left 93 sites off from the previous midterm in 2022.

Here is where the rivals stood.

Issue: Reducing polling locations

Tim O’Hare, incumbent

From the jump, O’Hare said he wanted to ensure each approved polling location had at least 20 people voting at it in 2022 and that there were none across the street from one another. Of the 2022 Election Day sites with the lowest voter turnout, none had 20 or fewer ballots cast. The least used one had 37 people in the 12 hours of voting.

Each Election Day polling location costs around $4,500 to operate, O’Hare said at a True Texas Project meeting on Sept. 14.

Alisa Simmons, Precinct 2 commissioner

Simmons was staunchly opposed to any reduction of polling locations and fought to add dozens back to the list when the final vote came around on Sept. 1. Joining forces with U.S. Senate hopeful James Talarico, Simmons stood outside the University of Texas at Arlington Maverick Activity Center for a press conference to say there shouldn’t be any unnecessary cuts to the 2022 list.

Related Stories from Fort Worth Star-Telegram

                Rachel Royster

                    Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Rachel Royster is a news and government reporter for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, specifically focused on Tarrant County.
