As Mavericks walked through the Central Library mall Wednesday, they were greeted by multiple student organizations and resources at the Involvement Fair.

The event encouraged students to explore clubs and on-campus resources they might not have heard of before or seen at Activity Fair Day.

Rachel Dixon, president of the Forensic Science Society, said the organization connects students with career opportunities in forensics. The club also welcomes those who have a general interest in true crime and forensics through game nights and other events.

Dixon said people in the field are enthusiastic to help the next generation of forensic scientists grow.

“I’m really happy to be a part of that chain,” she said.

In addition to career opportunities, the fair offered students the chance to learn new skills and explore their interests.

Roberto Liro, president of the Video Game Developers Organization, said the club teaches people how to create video games, even if they have no experience.

The organization holds weekly workshops and competitions to teach the fundamentals of video game development, Liro said.

Other computer science and computer engineering organizations often focus on making professional apps or websites. He said doing that eliminates the fun of computer science.

“Things like this that require a bit more creativity are a big aspect of why we’re still around.” Liro said.

He started off as a member a year ago, he said. Then he moved up through different leadership positions until he became president of the club.

“I had no experience with making video games before, so I was able to join the team, and they were able to help me along the way,” Liro said.

As the day went on, students gathered around the tables outside the library. They looked at the groups they could join, finding community as they went.
