Once-rural roads have become treacherous, busy thoroughfares. To keep up with growing traffic, the state is investing heavily in a very busy intersection: Culebra Road and Highway 211. But that means pesky construction closures in the meantime.

For several weeks, the intersection has been a confusing array of orange cones, sending drivers off their familiar path into construction lanes. But major progress has been announced this week.

“Paving on FM 471 (Culebra Road) is expected to wrap up this week, with the full roadway from Old FM 471 to Little Geronimo anticipated to open by early September,” a Texas Department of Transportation announcement on September 2 states. “The project remains on schedule for completion in February 2027.”

What was once a stoplight controlling traffic between Highway 211 and Culebra Road will soon become an overpass along the highway, reducing traffic buildup in an increasingly busy stretch of the county. Currently, though, drivers are guided off Highway 211 ahead of the intersection as the overpass is completed (though it’s somewhat standing already) and diverted through a lighted intersection with an underpass.

Back in 2019, when the project was presented to residents, TxDOT estimated that drivers along this 3-mile stretch of Culebra would early quadruple between 2018 and 2045, skyrocketing from 12,230 daily drivers to more than 45,000.

Crashes have also ticked upward, with TxDOT reporting 17 wrecks in 2012 and climbing year over year to reach 33 in 2018. A TxDOT query for intersection-related crashes alone on this stretch of Culebra Road showed upward of 70 wrecks in 2025.

Ultimately, the project will transform that corner of Culebra Road from a two-lane country road into a four-lane road with a median and dedicated turn lanes. In addition, Highway 211 commuters should be able to bypass the congestion entirely by early 2027.

There’s no doubt the Far Westside of San Antonio – even beyond the city limits and toward the…

[8
820,59494,82,84,83
post-438759","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-antonio","tag-mysastaff","tag-mysatranspo","tag-san-antonio","tag-san-antonio-headlines","tag-san-antonio-news
["GET
