{"id":439588,"date":"2026-09-18T05:14:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-18T05:14:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/439588\/"},"modified":"2026-09-18T05:14:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-18T05:14:10","slug":"lubbock-health-director-honored-for-measles-outbreak-response","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/439588\/","title":{"rendered":"Lubbock health director honored for measles outbreak response"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">HOUSTON, TX (KCBD) &#8211; Dr. Katherine Wells, DrPH, MPH, director of the Lubbock Health Department, was recognized in Houston Thursday for her leadership in handling last year\u2019s West Texas measles outbreak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Wells was applauded for coordinating the region\u2019s response to what officials called an unprecedented outbreak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, but last year, the disease spread across Texas, resulting in 762 cases, with more than half occurring in Gaines County.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cUnfortunately, that measles crisis, outbreak, was only the beginning of what we\u2019re seeing in the US now with huge outbreaks in other communities, and over the last two weeks we\u2019ve lost four individuals in the state of Pennsylvania due to a vaccine-preventable disease,\u201d Wells said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Award presented at state meeting<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Wells received the Ralph D.
