FRISCO \u2014 There were a few days earlier this summer when Thomas Harley wasn\u2019t sure he\u2019d return to\u00a0Dallas,<\/a> where he left in the spring under contract for the next eight seasons.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always known this is a business, but for the first time, it really affected me that way,\u201d Harley said during the first day of training camp<\/a> Thursday, the first time he’s spoken about the near trade. \u201cIt was a stressful week, for sure. But at the end of the day, it didn\u2019t go through, and I\u2019m happy to be in Dallas.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The trade was one effort by the Stars to make a significant move this offseason while also being able to fit in a new long-term deal for Jason Robertson<\/a>. Werenski, despite being one of the best defensemen in the league, makes $9.58 million annually, which is about $1 million less than what Harley makes on his new eight-year deal that begins this fall.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While Harley has been a key piece of Dallas\u2019 success across his five seasons in the NHL, he took a step back last season statistically, recording 36 points in 70 games compared to 50 in 78 the year prior. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year wasn\u2019t my best, but I\u2019m proud of the way I finished,\u201d Harley said. \u201cI think I played well in the playoffs. I played well in the Olympics, which was big for me. I want to continue to defend well and hopefully get back on the scoresheet.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Harley was adamant about wanting to do so in Dallas \u2014 and his coaches and management reiterated that sentiment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a big part of the team,\u201d GM Jim Nill said. \u201cI\u2019ve talked to Thomas when the situation happened and when we came back here, and we move on.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Harley said he has \u201cno hard feelings\u201d and respects Nill and how he handled the summer. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI talked with Jim. I talked with Gully. We\u2019re all on the same page. I want to be here. They want me here, so it\u2019s all good,\u201d he said. \u201cI think Jim is well known as one of the best people in hockey. He\u2019s very loyal to his players, treats them like family, and we appreciate that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Head coach Glen Gulutzan said he\u2019s grateful that he remains somewhat removed from the contract conversations. He\u2019s able to keep his conversations with players like Harley and Robertson strictly to hockey.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As Gulutzan looks to revamp the offense, he had Harley skate with Miro Heiskanen on Thursday. When paired together, the duo has been one of the league\u2019s top two-way pairings.\u00a0<\/p>\n
