Third through fifth graders should spend less than 1.5 hours, while sixth through eighth graders should be maxed at two hours.

High school students don’t have specified daily limits, because screen use will vary based on the student’s course selection.

“Dallas ISD takes screen time concerns seriously,” Angie Gaylord, chief academic officer, said in a news release. “Instead of increasing device usage, Dallas ISD has enforced strict screen time limits.”

The guidelines come as more North Texas districts move to curb screen time in classrooms. School leaders are weighing the benefits of technology against its impact on students’ socioemotional wellbeing, sleep patterns and concentration.

Richardson ISD sought to decrease passive time in front of a device. For example, first through fourth graders should spend 15 to 20 minutes. Teachers should not reward students with extra screen time, and administrators asked them to be considerate of how often they use video to teach.

Likewise, Garland ISD issued guidelines limiting screen time to one hour a day for students ages 2 to 5 and two hours a day for students older than 6.

The crackdown on screen time has also come from the Texas Legislature. Lawmakers passed a bill banning students from using cell phones, including during lunch and between classes, which went into effect last school year. The ban doesn’t stop districts from using tablets and laptops.

Dallas ISD wants teachers to translate screen time into instruction, according to the news release. For example, students can watch an educational video; then, summarize and discuss the recording with their classmates.

The DMN Education Lab deepens the coverage and conversation about urgent education issues critical to the future of North Texas.

The DMN Education Lab is a community-funded journalism initiative, with support from Bobby and Lottye Lyle, Communities Foundation of Texas, The Dallas Foundation, Dallas Regional Chamber, Deedie Rose, Garrett and Cecilia Boone, Judy and Jim Gibbs, The Meadows Foundation, The Murrell Foundation, Ron Steinhart, Solutions Journalism Network, Southern Methodist University, Sydney Smith Hicks, and the University of Texas at Dallas.
