A suspected drunk driver was arrested after seven people were injured in a crash during a police chase last week, Grand Prairie Police said.<\/p>\n

A fun-filled night turned stressful for a North Texas<\/a> father as his teen was one of several people injured in a crash in Grand Prairie during a police chase last week, when a suspected drunk driver was arrested.<\/p>\n A Grand Prairie Police officer traveling southbound on Texas 360 near Brown Boulevard about 10:45 p.m. on Sept. 7 saw a major accident when one vehicle collided with another, police have said.<\/p>\n During the pursuit, the driver caused an additional collision, hitting multiple vehicles and fled southbound on Texas 360, prompting the chase, police said.<\/p>\n The driver, who has not been publicly identified, was determined to be intoxicated and arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and collision involving injury, police said.<\/p>\n At least seven people were taken to hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.<\/p>\n Teen\u2019s car upside-down, totaled<\/p>\n A 17-year-old high school senior and an excellent driver, was driving to Dickies Arena for a concert with her friends, Ben Guthrie, her father said in a conversation with the Star-Telegram.<\/p>\n That day, they spent time together as a family before she left around 5 p.m. to pick up her friends, Guthrie said. The father said he expected her home by 11 p.m.<\/p>\n At 10:30 p.m., Guthrie received a call that his daughter had been in an accident and her car was totaled. He immediately drove to Grand Prairie, he said.<\/p>\n On the way, he saw more than 15 emergency vehicles, including ambulances, tow trucks, and fire trucks. Unable to take the exit, he drove around for about five minutes before following a police officer and tow truck, Guthrie said.<\/p>\n When Guthrie found his daughter, she was sitting on the ground, holding a police officer\u2019s hand. Her car sat upside down on an embankment, roughly a quarter-mile from the crash site, with all its windows shattered, the father said.<\/p>\n Guthrie said his daughter and her two friends ended up suspended upside down by their seat belts before a bystander helped unbuckle them and pull them out.<\/p>\n Guthrie took his daughter to an emergency room in Dallas, where doctors performed X-rays and a CT scan and gave her Tylenol. All test results came back negative. It took four or five days for her residual soreness to fade, he said.<\/p>\n \u201cShe does not know how many times they flipped, but she remembered advice her mom gave her growing up, which was in an accident to go limp, because if you\u2019re tense, that\u2019s going to be the biggest risk of injury,\u201d Guthrie said. \u201cShe remembered that and let her body go limp as she was flipping and skidding.\u201d<\/p>\n Guthrie called it remarkable that no one in her car was seriously injured. The extent of their injuries consisted of bruises and skin abrasions from the airbags and seat belts.<\/p>\n Initially, the father said he went into \u201cfull logistics mode\u201d to focus on his daughter and navigate the situation. The fear did not set in until doctors officially confirmed there were no internal injuries.<\/p>\n \u201cI kind of spent a lot of Labor Day, and then the next day at work, really struggling to focus,\u201d Guthrie said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t really dive into my work because I kept going back to how close we came to something completely life-changing.\u201d<\/p>\n The father shared that the frustrating reality is there is little one can do to avoid such situations, other than staying off the road during drunk-driving peak times.<\/p>\n \u201cShe didn\u2019t do anything wrong,\u201d he said. \u201cShe got rear-ended by a car that was probably going over 100 mph with headlights off and plowed into traffic.\u201d<\/p>\n Related Stories from Fort Worth Star-Telegram<\/p>\n
