She appears on your feed mid-scroll, standing at the curb of some unassuming ranch house, and before you can flick your thumb, she’s off, sprinting across to the front door like it might vanish.

“Let me show you this really cool mid-century modern home,” she calls out, and suddenly you’re inside, staring at wood-paneled walls and a sunken living room that looks like it hasn’t changed since Richard Nixon was in office.

This is Mj Maitland, a Dallas-Fort Worth residential and commercial realtor, who has quietly built a reputation as the region’s unofficial curator of time capsules. She has a knack for finding ’50s split-levels, ’60s bungalows, ’70s conversation pits and the houses that look like someone airlifted a slice of New Orleans and set it down in Texas. These are homes most people drive past without a second glance, homes still wearing their original wallpaper like a badge of honor.

What separates Maitland from the sea of agents flooding your feed isn’t just the running, it’s her encyclopedic knowledge. She treats these houses like museum pieces with the sense of something worth saving before the flippers and the beige-paint brigade arrive. And she’d be the first to tell you the whole signature move happened entirely by accident.

Sign up for the Arts & Culture newsletter to get the latest stories delivered to your inbox

THANK YOU!

You’re all set.

CLOSE

Always on the run

“It was actually supposed to be a walk,” she says, laughing at the memory. It was her first-ever video, the very first home she wanted to showcase, and by the third or fourth take, the Texas heat and her own nerves had worn her patience thin. “I was not used to being on camera. And then I was just getting an attitude with my media team, and they’re like, ‘No, you need to walk faster.’ I ran because I was like, ‘Is this fast enough now?’”

It was fast enough. The take was equal parts sincere and unintentionally hilarious, so they posted it as-is, and the internet fell in love. She kept the intro. Once, she tried skipping the sprint entirely. Her audience revolted.

“Everyone was getting really, really mad at me for not running,” she says. “Jokingly, of course. But they loved it. So, I was like, ‘Okay, I’ll keep doing it.’”

Maitland has only been posting these videos for about three months. August marked her third. For someone barely a season into her online life as a realtor, the fluency is remarkable.

“I just loved it even before I started real estate. I love history,” she says. “It’s intriguing to see just the architecture of the home and little quirks and things that were built into the home just to make daily life easier back then, still being there.”

Maitland, echoing a common sentiment, mourns the artisan architecture lost to quickly constructed cookie cutter homes.

“I feel like the art of the home is lost now to white walls and gray LVP flooring. There’s no character in these homes anymore,” she says. “I love looking in places where you wouldn’t expect to find a detail, in the corner of the house where no one’s looking. I think all of that matters.”

Her role is to showcase the house honestly — quirks and creaks and 60-year-old carpet included — and let its character do the persuading.

“It’s old, you know, but that’s what gives its character. And it gives people the deciding factor to make it their own.”

The architectural style that keeps eluding her is the untouched Victorian. Texas has them, she says, but they rarely survive with their souls intact.

“The outside will look really cool and really promising, but then somebody has already come in and renovated it, so inside it just looks terrible, lacks so much character now,” Maitland says.

Her taste isn’t stuck in the past, though. Sustainability is just as exciting as original crown molding. She recently toured a home with native plants growing on the roof, solar panels, rainwater catchment and geothermal heating and cooling.

“I don’t think you ever hear Texas and sustainable really in the same sentence,” she says. “Anybody can build a million-dollar home, but it’s a whole different story to make it feel like a home.”

So, keep scrolling. Somewhere in North Texas, a beautiful old house is waiting and Maitland is already running toward it.

Meet Mj Maitland, DFW’s running realtor who’s gone viral for showcasing mid-century modern, ’50s–’70s time-capsule homes with charm.…

[9
107,102,104,103,116,8386,111,702
post-440152","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-dallas","tag-architecture","tag-dallas","tag-dallas-headlines","tag-dallas-news","tag-fort-worth","tag-history-nostalgia","tag-real-estate","tag-social-media
["GET
