The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office<\/a> recently posted about a phone scam that even savvy folks could easily fall for. It has all the hallmarks of an effective scam: it creates an extreme sense of urgency, the caller is persistent, and it sounds official and plausible. Luckily, a firefighter in our area recorded the call so other people can hear how the scam works and not fall for it.<\/p>\n

The Scam Call Was Filled With Red Flags<\/p>\n

You can listen to the 13-minute call here<\/a> if you like, but these are the major red flags to look for on this particular scam (and others):<\/p>\n

\u00a0Used\u00a0the wrong agency\u00a0name<\/p>\n

\u00a0Provided fake judge\u00a0names<\/p>\n

\u00a0Referenced the wrong\u00a0county<\/p>\n

\u00a0Withheld basic information, such as a supervisor\u2019s\u00a0name or rank\u00a0and a court\u00a0address<\/p>\n

\u00a0Used legal terms\u00a0incorrectly<\/p>\n

\u00a0Threatened immediate arrest<\/p>\n

\u00a0Demanded the issue\u00a0be resolved immediately<\/p>\n

\u00a0Told the recipient\u00a0not to discuss\u00a0the call with\u00a0anyone else<\/p>\n

Scammers Use Pressure To Make Victims Act Quickly<\/p>\n

Scammers know that their scam will fall apart if you have time to think about it, look it up, or talk about it with other people. So they create tactics that are designed to create fear and pressure. A caller who insists that you must make an immediate payment or resolve a supposed legal issue right away should be treated with caution.<\/p>\n

The RealSheriff’s Office Will Not Demand Payment Over The Phone<\/p>\n

The Lubbock County Sheriff\u2019s Office is reminding residents that it\u00a0will not call and demand payment\u00a0to resolve a warrant, jury-duty issue, or other legal matter.<\/p>\n

The agency also says it does not accept payments through bitcoin, Cash App, Venmo, or gift cards, and residents should be cautious of anyone directing them to make a payment somewhere other than an official county-owned location.<\/p>\n
