But this is me just doing what I feel is right. I am so proud of my family, but I didn’t know that people see me when they see my family,” she added. “I am humbled by it, a bit overwhelmed even.”

That distinction, between the person backstage and the persona under the lights is a thread purposefully and carefully woven through nearly 30 years of Davenport’s career: a hot start in pageants, decades on Dallas’ Rose Room stage and a drag family that currently amounts to 48 drag performers who call her “mom.”

A star before she knew it
Davenport said her drag career began almost by accident. At 19, home from college for the summer, she joined two friends backup dancing for the Miss Gay Texas USofA At Large contest. That Saturday night, she said, the three of them borrowed a friend’s makeup and decided, more or less on a whim, to enter the contest themselves.

“I didn’t even realize that I wanted to do drag for different reasons than them,” Davenport said. “I was interested in boys that like girls, so if I was dressed up as a girl, I might get the guy I want.”

She met Monty and CoCo, the drag parents who she said shaped her early career, the night of that contest. Weeks later, the pair took her to Classy Lady Boutique, a Dallas gown rental shop, where she found a dress priced at $900. Monty, who knew Davenport couldn’t swing that purchase, rubbed a zero off the tag, and they bought the dress for $90.

Davenport had no drag wardrobe, no makeup kit and no formal training when Monty told her she was entering the Miss Dallas USofA At Large pageant. She won on a Wednesday. The state contest was that Friday, leaving her one day to get ready.

“I didn’t have a chance to be a drag baby,” Davenport said. “I won a state contest weeks into my drag career.”

That win, Miss Gay Texas USofA At Large 1993, doubled as a preliminary to the national Miss Gay USofA At Large pageant, but Davenport was not yet old enough to compete on that stage. Her parents had to sign off just for her to enter the state contest, and organizers would not let her advance nationally that year. She would not compete again until 1999, the year after she started performing at Station 4.

In between, she said, she built a career the hard way. She was hired on the spot to perform in Longview, despite owning nothing for the role. Davenport said Monty and CoCo outfitted her out of their own closets.

“The right people saw something in me and were willing to help me,” Davenport said. “I learned how to be a professional female impersonator in weeks with their help.”

She said she tried out a more traditional path, taking a job in social work after college. She said she lasted 19 days before quitting to perform full time, getting rides from friends between Dallas and Longview most weekends. Living at home with her parents at 20, Davenport said she came home late from a show one night and could not find her house key.

Her father walked outside to find her standing in the driveway in a full gown and crown.

“He looked at my mother and said, ‘Look who won Miss America,’” Davenport recalled. “I feel so grateful that I got the reaction I did from my parents. They always supported me.”

‘The best experience of my life’
Davenport went on to win Miss Gay Texas USofA in 2008, and she calls it the achievement she is proudest of, more than a decade after her first Texas win came too early for her to compete for the national crown.

“I’ve never been treated like a queen in such a way,” Davenport said. “It was the best experience of my life. The way people looked at me… I loved it.”

Grace, power and still commanding the stage
Nearly three decades after she started working at Station 4, Davenport remains a fixture of the Rose Room cast, the drag showcase that has anchored the club since 1986. Her current cast bio describes her simply: grace, power, commanding presence.

This month, Davenport is overseeing the biggest change to the Rose Room show in years, a project she calls deeply personal and, at times, deeply stressful.

The overhaul strips the show down to its performances: MC monologues, which used to run as long as 40 minutes, are being cut to roughly seven, replaced by short, TikTok-style video transitions between numbers that keep the audience guessing who is coming out next.

“The biggest complaint we get is that there’s too much talking in the show,” Davenport said. “So let’s take the talking out and see what they have to say now.”

The new format runs straight through with no intermissions, and performers now have a strict two-minute window once the overture starts. The changes come from a philosophy Davenport said she’s carried since the golden days of pageantry: The mystique is the job.
“Drag queens are dragons or unicorns,” she said. “Now everybody’s one.”

She said she wants that sense of spectacle back at the Rose Room, and she wants her performers treated accordingly: “You’re supposed to be a star. We shouldn’t see you at the bar.”

It is a demanding standard, one she said comes from decades of watching audiences give performers less and less of their attention.

“Good drag queens make 50 cents look like $50,000,” she said. “That’s what I want my girls and every other performer to understand.”

More than an umbrella
Davenport does not have biological children. But she has 48 people who call her “Mom”: members of the iconic drag family that includes Sahara Davenport, Kennedy Davenport, Lady Deja Davenport, Honey Davenport, Monét X Change, Armani Nicole Davenport, Bianca Davenport Starr, Londenn Davenport and A’keria Chanel Davenport, several of whom went on to gain national recognition on RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Her mentoring style is direct, by her own admission: “If you want to be a showgirl, you have to be a businesswoman,” Davenport said. “I will push you until there’s no more pushing.”
She traces that philosophy back to her own mother, a travel agency owner whom Davenport describes as the true inspiration for her stage persona: always put together, always charming with strangers, a natural performer who never needed a stage. Davenport’s father was a judge, and both parents showed up for her pageant wins, sitting in the audience when she won At Large and again when she won Miss Texas USofA.

The lesson that stuck came in the eighth grade, when her mother sat her down for a frank conversation.

“You’ve got to be more than an umbrella,” her mother told her. “Everybody loves it when it rains, but as soon as the sun comes out, they put it down and forget about it.”

Davenport’s mother is 86 now and, according to Kelexis, still gets fully dressed every day.
“Kelexis is me pretending to be my mother,” Davenport said. “She’s concerned; she cares, even when she’s exhausted.

“That’s who Kelexis is. I’m not known as the ‘sweet mom,’ but my track record speaks for itself.”

Out of the wig and heels, Davenport describes herself as an introvert, someone who would rather blend into a room than command it: “Kelexis is a uniform I wear for work,” she said. “I see myself as a blender, not the star of the show. I just do what I was hired to do, and you never know who’s watching.”

That humility sits alongside a career she never expected to have.

“I didn’t think that there was any way for me, an overweight Black man running around doing jump splits, that was going to be what I would do the rest of my life,” Davenport said.

Nearly 30 years, 44 states and one national title later, she says it is a calling rather than a job, one built on a value she said she has never compromised: telling the truth, on stage and off.
“When you tell a lie, you have to live it,” Davenport said. “And I don’t want that for myself or anyone else.”

Her wish for the performers who carry her name, on stage or in her drag family, is simple: “What I want anyone, especially a Davenport, to be, is a person who is not afraid to be authentically them,” she said. “I want you to always be proud of what you put on stage, and if you’re not, don’t go. You don’t get a retake in a live show. You get one chance to be spectacular.”

The Rose Room hosts a show honoring Davenport’s contributions to the Dallas drag community on Sept. 19, the first time the club has staged an appreciation event in her honor. Davenport said she has been told only that some of her favorite performers will take part; beyond that, she said, she knows as little as anyone else.

She leads the Michael Doughman Parade down Cedar Springs the following day, Sept. 20, as grand marshal of Dallas’ 2026 Pride celebration.

“I don’t feel like I’m doing anything spectacular,” Davenport said. “I’m just being myself, helping people who I feel are worthy of help. I guess they see something in me that I don’t see in myself.”

Related

Rose Room legend Kelexis Davenport is matriarch of one of the best known drag families Rose Room legend…

[9
102,104,103,38737
post-440607","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-dallas","tag-dallas","tag-dallas-headlines","tag-dallas-news","tag-featured-this-week
["GET
