Fat Nwigwe is not the kind of artist who needs permission to step into the spotlight.<\/p>\n

Red Bull 1520’s 60 Second Freestyle series gives artists a stripped-down platform built around bars, performance and presence.<\/p>\n But Nwigwe said the shift does not feel like a reinvention.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n “I love the fact that people love me for who I am, because I’m not acting,” Nwigwe told Chron. “I am who I am on screen, off the screen, on stage, off the stage.”<\/p>\n Fat Nwigwe does not describe herself as someone chasing front-and-center attention. She admitted the pressure of being in the spotlight is real, but it does not move her because her sense of self is already settled.<\/p>\n Ahmed Humble (Chron)<\/p>\n That is the center of “QUEEN.” The song does not feel like Nwigwe proving she belongs. It feels like she is reminding listeners she was already there.<\/p>\n “Sometimes, as women, we have different seasons and phases of our lives,” Nwigwe said. “Because you’re in a certain season, it doesn’t mean that you’re less of who you are.”<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n For years, Nwigwe has often been seen beside Tobe, whose fall album is expected to continue a busy stretch for the Houston rapper. Tobe was present, but mostly blended into the room, serving as support while the cameras, lights and questions stayed on her.<\/p>\n Ahmed Humble (Chron)<\/p>\n Nwigwe said she was comfortable beside him and has enjoyed being his longtime creative partner, but “QUEEN” came from a different season.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n “For the longest time, I was comfortable right next to Tobe and doing the things and all that stuff together,” Nwigwe said. “I’m just in a season where I’m saying what I need to say, the way I need to say it.”<\/p>\n What “QUEEN” really means<\/p>\n To Nwigwe, being a queen is not about fame, styling or being seen by the right people. It is about responsibility.<\/p>\n “I feel like any woman that takes care of their responsibility, whatever it may be, that really intentionally takes care of everything around them, all of their responsibility, they’re queens,” Nwigwe said. “If you take care of your responsibilities, and you about your business, you are queen, and that’s it.”<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n That confidence, she said, comes from knowing what is true and refusing to build yourself around a lie.<\/p>\n “The secret to confidence is understanding the truth, and not the lie,” Nwigwe said. “Don’t believe the lie, believe the truth, and then you will be confident.”<\/p>\n Nwigwe does not describe herself as someone chasing front-and-center attention. She admitted the pressure of being in the spotlight is real, but it does not move her because her sense of self is already settled.<\/p>\n “I don’t really like being front and center,” Nwigwe said. “I think it’s a lot of pressure. Her delivery is calm, but not quiet. Nwigwe said when her children are with her at a shoot or studio session, she is “70 percent mom” and “30 percent artist.” That split does not stop the work. It shapes the rhythm of it.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n “If I need to change this diaper real quick, I’m about to change this diaper real quick,” Nwigwe said. “If I need to put on some makeup and perform real quick, I’m about to get on stage and perform real quick, and then go to the green room and do whatever I need to do for my family.”<\/p>\n She said the trick is not trying to carry every responsibility at once.<\/p>\n “Just take it step by step and enjoy each moment for what it is,” Nwigwe said. “I think that’s how I navigate life.”<\/p>\n Follow the trail<\/p>\n The solo work is also leading somewhere. Nwigwe said a full solo project is expected at the top of next year, with another surprise coming in the fall.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n “It’s all leading,” Nwigwe said. “Just follow the trail. Follow the trails. It’s gonna be good.”<\/p>\n She credits some of that patience to the early days of “Get Twisted Sundays,” the freestyle series that helped build the Nwigwes’ creative world long before the national attention.<\/p>\n “Tobe showed me how to be relentless in what it is that you do,” Nwigwe said. “If you have a goal and you got a mission and you have a purpose, you have to be relentless for it.”<\/p>\n That same partnership still matters.
