ELMENDORF, Texas \u2014 A San Antonio-area family is sharing their story as part of a new Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) campaign promoting seat belt use and proper child passenger safety.<\/p>\n
Emilce Ferreira and her husband, Julio Torres, of Elmendorf, said they are grateful they attended a TxDOT-sponsored car seat event when their son Santiago was born.<\/p>\n
Their family was driving from San Antonio to Austin on a rainy day in September 2017 when another driver hydroplaned, hit a concrete barrier and collided with their vehicle, according to TxDOT.<\/p>\n
Ferreira and Torres were wearing seat belts, and Santiago, who was 3 years old at the time, was properly secured in his car seat. Despite the serious crash, the family suffered only minor injuries.<\/p>\n
Santiago is now 11 years old.<\/p>\n
