But an awkward on-field exchange after the game between Texas coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/sports\/longhorns\/football\/article\/texas-football-holly-rowe-steve-sarkisian-22430724.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Sarkisian<\/a> and sideline reporter Holly Rowe precipitated an even more uneasy moment for Texas quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/sports\/columns\/article\/texas-longhorns-arch-manning-holly-rowe-22433460.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arch Manning<\/a>, who joked in a Monday press conference about an AI-generated video that depicted Sarkisian striking Rowe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, defensive assistant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/sports\/longhorns\/football\/article\/johnny-nansen-dwi-arrest-22436502.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Johnny Nansen got arrested<\/a> on suspicion of DWI.<\/p>\n<p>But Texas got back to football in a third meeting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/sports\/longhorns\/football\/article\/texas-football-steve-sarkisian-arch-manning-utsa-22430722.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with UTSA<\/a> (2-1) over the past five years Saturday night. The Longhorns didn\u2019t look like the nation\u2019s best team, especially with a sloppy performance on offense. Quarterback Arch Manning was just 16-of-32 for 161 yards and two touchdown passes to Cam Coleman through three quarters, and the Longhorns scored just one touchdown in four trips inside the red zone before adding on a late score.<\/p>\n<p>But the Longhorns\u2019 defense dominated. Texas beat UTSA 30-6.<\/p>\n<p>Sara Diggins\/Austin American-Statesman<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line looks good for the nation&#8217;s No. 1 team, but head coach Steve Sarkisian has some things to fix before the No. 15\u00a0Longhorns visit Tennessee Saturday top open SEC play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Freshman running back Derrek Cooper plows in from the 1-yard line for his first touchdown as a Longhorn. Texas fans finally exhale a little bit, and some start heading for the exits. Don&#8217;t they know Sixth Street is open till 2 a.m.?<\/p>\n<p>Texas edge Colin Simmons is on the sidelines in street clothes with a boot on his right foot. He wasn&#8217;t helped off the field at any point, but he may have tweaked an ankle or foot at some point in the first half.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Texas goes for it on fourth-and-5 from the UTSA 14-yard line, and QB Arch Manning sails a pass over the head of Emmett Mosley V. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian showed his frustration with all the field goals, and the Longhorns come away from their fourth trip into the red zone without any points for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Texas kicker Gianni Spetic misses a 36-yard field goal, but the Longhorns get a break after UTSA roughs the kicker. But no matter; the Longhorns are having some red-zone issues, and Spetic boots home a 23-yarder for his third field goal of the game. Texas has made three trips into the red zone but has just one touchdown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Arch Manning has completed just one of his past seven passes, and the Texas offense seems stuck in the muck. Fortunately for Texas, its defense continues to stifle the Roadrunners. UTSA has just 89 yards of offense and punts for the fifth time. Texas takes over at midfield, looking for some offensive juice.<\/p>\n<p>A sloppy opening drive by Texas, a 37-yard punt by Texas&#8217;s Mac Chiumento and a 15-yard facemask call on Derek Williams Jr. on the punt sets up a 43-yard field goal from UTSA&#8217;s Michael\u00a0Petro. It&#8217;s not pretty, but Texas still holds a comfortable lead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The Longhorns put on a workmanlike effort to take a commanding lead into halftime. They have 228 yards of offense compared to 70 for UTSA, and it&#8217;s almost evenly split between Arch Manning&#8217;s arm (116 yards passing) and an efficient ground game (112).<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t pretty, but QB Arch Manning and the Texas offense do enough to get Gianni Spetic\u00a0 in range for a 34-yard field goal. Manning used his legs more than his arm on the drive and took some big hits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Texas has now punted or been stopped on fourth down on its last four drives. UTSA would love to put some pressure on the Longhorns by scoring on this drive, but the Roadrunners have just 67 total yards.<\/p>\n<p>Texas DT Hero Kanu is having a massive game. He&#8217;s got a tackle for a loss, a pass breakup, a quarterback pressure and just forced a UTSA punt after forcing Owen McCown to throw it away on third-and-long. But UTSA responds by getting a fourth-down stop. Steve Sarkisian rolled the dice at midfield and came up with a 12 when Arch Manning overshot Emmett Mosley V.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>QB Arch Manning is spreading it around, but he looks for Cam Coleman in the red zone. The Auburn transfer hauls in his second TD of the game, this one from 3 yards out. Debate in the pressbox: Who will lead the Longhorns in receiving this season? Right now, Ryan Wingo and Emmett Mosley V each have 11 while Coleman has 10.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>UTSA has come to play, at least on offense. The Roadrunners are testing the Texas run defense, and the 2025 bugbear of penalties has bit the Longhorns, who have drawn three flags for 45 yards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Gianni Spetic shows off his\u00a0leg for Texas with a 52-yard field goal after a personal foul by center Connor Robertson bogs down a promising drive. Spetic has a strong leg; he made four of five from at least\u00a050 yards last season for Memphis. His career long is 55.<\/p>\n<p>UTSA gets a 34-yard field goal from Michael Petro on its second drive. UTSA did a nice job getting the edge on\u00a0that drive, especially running to Colin Simmons&#8217; side. But Simmons does get his second sack of the season to end the drive. Will Henderson III has six carries for 33 yards for UTSA, and the\u00a0Roadrunners picked up 41 yards on the ground on that drive before the sack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a dream start\u00a0for Texas. After the turnover, quarterback Arch Manning finds Cam Coleman for a 24-yard touchdown pass across the middle. It looks like the Longhorns are glad\u00a0to be back on the\u00a0field.<\/p>\n<p>On the first snap from scrimmage, a hot pass from UTSA quarterback Owen McCown foes through the\u00a0hands of DJ Allen Jr., and Texas linebacker Rasheem Biles comes down with his second pick of the season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Texas wins the toss and will defer to the second half. The Longhorns&#8217; defense will try and set the tone first.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Starting free safety\u00a0Kobe Black is not suited up during warmups and looks poised to miss the game with an undisclosed injury. That likely means junior Derek Williams Jr. will get his fourth career start in his 32nd career game. Defensive tackle Justus Terry, defensive back Xavier Filsaime and tight end Nick Townsend are also not suited up.
