It is not part of Texas’ childcare-assistance system, however. Bezos Academy does not accept state childcare subsidies, referrals or funding in Texas, and officials said a child’s enrollment does not prevent a family from applying for or remaining on the state assistance waitlist.

For Brown, who expects to earn a business administration degree with a concentration in human resources in January, the new arrangement offers relief from the constant question of whether her son is safe and engaged while she works or attends class.

“It just gives me the mental space to dream of being able to pursue school even more and get my master’s,” she said.

TWU says student-parents make up 13% of its graduate and undergraduate student body. In the university’s fall 2023 Trellis Student Financial Wellness Survey, 32% of student-parents said they had missed class during the previous semester because they lacked childcare.

Article continues below this ad

That can mean students bring children to class or miss class because they have no one to care for them, said Monica Mendez-Grant, TWU’s vice president for student life. The university previously had a daycare facility on campus, but it closed years ago, leaving a gap for families with children who had not yet reached kindergarten.

<img alt="A classroom at Bezos Academy Denton, a preschool that has opened on TWU-owned land across University Drive. The academy seeks to serve communities with families earning up to 400% of the federal poverty level.

At the academy’s ribbon-cutting ceremony, Texas Women’s Foundation president and CEO Karen Hughes White said half of Texans live in childcare deserts, defined as areas with at least three children for every available childcare seat. She said full-time, center-based infant care averages about $11,000 a year in Texas, a cost that can force parents, particularly mothers, out of the workforce or delay their education.

Related: TWU plans downtown college to reach students who haven’t enrolled in college

Article continues below this ad

The preschool is a public-private partnership among TWU, the city of Denton, Bezos Academy and the Texas Women’s Foundation. TWU provided the land and said it covered the remaining construction cost after Denton contributed $1.5 million. Bezos Academy will pay the operating expenses, including utilities, maintenance and staffing.

The agreement guarantees that at least 20% of the academy’s 120 seats will go to children of TWU students, faculty and staff, TWU Vice President for Finance and Administration Jason Tomlinson said. Bezos Academy uses a lottery process and gives TWU-affiliated applicants priority within it. Officials said the school has met the minimum allocation but did not yet have the final number of TWU-affiliated children enrolled.

Demand has already outpaced the academy’s capacity. Bezos Academy said it received nearly twice as many applications as it had seats and has a waitlist. TWU is seeking outside partners that could provide childcare stipends or help student-parents without free care find resources in their communities, Mendez-Grant said.

Related: Dallas County loses $1.63 billion a year as childcare costs sideline workers

TWU plans to track participation by students, faculty and staff, then compare persistence, retention and time-to-degree outcomes for student-parents who use the academy with those of other parenting students. Tomlinson said the school is expected to operate under an initial 10-year agreement, offering families one less barrier as they pursue college and work.

Article continues below this ad

Matt Flores, TWU’s assistant vice president for communications, said childcare access can be a workforce-development issue as much as a campus service. Addressing it for student-parents, he said, “frees them up in ways that are transformational.”

Bezos Academy is also planning a Lakewood location at the Fowler Senior Living Community, though officials said it does not yet have an opening date because construction and licensing for the full facility are not complete.

This reporting is part of the Future of North Texas, a community-funded journalism initiative supported by the Commit Partnership, Communities Foundation of Texas, The Dallas Foundation, the Dallas Mavericks, the Dallas Regional Chamber, Deedie Rose, Lisa and Charles Siegel, the McCune-Losinger Family Fund, The Meadows Foundation, the Perot Foundation, the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and the University of Texas at Dallas.
