HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — A young child was killed, and two others were injured in a shooting in northwest Harris County on Saturday night, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.<\/p>\n
Investigators said the shooter fired shots at Monica Hicks, who was driving west on Grant Road near Jones Road with her five children in the car at around 11:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
Hicks told ABC13 she stopped the car and tried to get her children out when she realized her youngest daughter, Zah’layah, was slumped over and not speaking. The five-year-old girl was shot, deputies said.<\/p>\n
Hicks said she called 911, and paramedics tried to save Zah’layah before she was flown to a hospital by helicopter and pronounced dead.<\/p>\n
Two other children in the car were injured by broken glass, deputies said.<\/p>\n
Authorities said it appears the shooting stemmed from road rage. Hicks told ABC13 she doesn’t believe that’s what happened, and that she didn’t cut off or exchange words with anyone.<\/p>\n
Hicks said she was coming from her mom’s house and didn’t hear what you’d expect gunshots to sound like. She said she heard a whizzing and then screams from her children.<\/p>\n
Hicks said she wants whoever did this to turn themselves in.<\/p>\n
