On Saturday, through the heat and swarms of dragonflies, a small crowd of people visited booths surrounding the grass of Levitt Pavilion for the Preparedness in the Park event. <\/p>\n

The educational fair invited people to learn about being prepared in emergency situations, according to the Levitt Pavilion website. <\/p>\n

Hosted by the Arlington Office of Emergency Management, this was the second Preparedness in the Park event, said Erin Dalrymple, city emergency management planner. <\/p>\n

Starting at 10 a.m., people visited Red Cross volunteers, the Arlington library\u2019s booth, Stormwater Management, the Arlington Fire Department and more. First responders, K-9 units and volunteers greeted people with enthusiasm. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re each going to have preparedness information that is specific to their organization,\u201d Dalrymple said. <\/p>\n

Booths offered free handouts, prizes and information not only on their fields but also on ways people can prepare and make a difference. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m hoping we can reach as many residents as possible and get them the information that they need to have in case of an emergency,\u201d Dalrymple said. <\/p>\n

Yard games littered the grass. A coloring table stood next to the information booth while a slideshow played important information on a screen. <\/p>\n

The first 25 people to visit all the booths won a 72-hour emergency kit. Arlington resident Salvador Gonzalez, 28, visited several booths to get his bingo card stamped. Gonzalez said that he had learned a lot about being prepared from the booths. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s things that everyone keeps in the back of their head in terms of preparedness, like, \u2018You should have some food, some water, a flashlight,\u2019 but it\u2019s not until you get out here and listen to these experts that you kind of realize, \u2018Oh, I’m missing this or I’m missing that,\u2019\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

Gonzalez said events like these are great for the community and civic engagement. <\/p>\n

Arlington resident Hajo Johnson, 26, learned about the event through his mother, who forwarded an email sent by the city. He said he loved seeing people come out and volunteer to educate the public. <\/p>\n

American Red Cross volunteer disaster supervisor Michael Barber talked with attendees about what the Red Cross does for the community, such as first aid and trauma aid. Barber said events like this are great because they get to connect with the community, spreading awareness and having fun. <\/p>\n

\u201cI wish more cities would do this kind of stuff,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
