The UTA women’s tennis team opened its season this weekend at the Abilene Christian University-hosted ACU Invite at the Cecil and Judi Eager Tennis Pavilion in Abilene, Texas. <\/p>\n
The team had impressive singles performances, as sophomore Tasnime Ahamout and freshman Maria Isabel Suarez each battled to their championship matches in their respective flights. <\/p>\n
In flight C of the singles bracket, Ahamout beat out Marissa Minetti, a Tarleton State University sophomore, then beat Kinley VanPel, a Texas State University sophomore, through a medical retirement, advancing the player to Sunday’s flight final. <\/p>\n
In the final, Ahamout dominated with back-to-back 6-4 sets to beat Giuliana Ciangherotti, a University of North Texas sophomore. <\/p>\n
In flight D of the singles bracket, Suarez set the tone in her collegiate debut, winning her first match with 6-4 and 6-0 set victories. She then battled back after a first-set loss to beat Abilene Christian freshman Anna Krljic to advance to the final, where she lost in two sets. <\/p>\n
Meanwhile, sophomore Diana Kaibara reached her flight\u2019s semifinals. After a hard-fought match against Teodora Prisadnikova, a Texas Tech University freshman, she lost to Allie Bittner, a Southern Methodist University freshman, in two sets. <\/p>\n
Texas State freshman Avery Arant needed a tiebreaker in the second set and a super tiebreaker in the third set to beat UTA sophomore Flora Farkaslaki. <\/p>\n
Maverick sophomore Sofia Selle and junior Vanja Cado each lost their opening round matches in two sets, with Selle falling to North Texas freshman Maya Chen, and Cado taken down by Tarleton State freshman Nuria Lafitte-Valls. <\/p>\n
In doubles play, none of the three Maverick duos advanced past the first round. Selle and Ahamout fell 6-1 to a team from North Texas, Cado and Kaibara lost 6-4 to a Texas State team and Farkaslaki and Suarez were taken down 6-2 by an Abilene Christian duo. <\/p>\n
The Mavericks will follow this result at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Texas Regionals on Oct. 8-11 at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco. <\/p>\n
