IKEA\u2019s future 289,000-square-foot store in Live Oak<\/a> is more than eight times larger.<\/p>\nMySA asked residents in several San Marcos Facebook groups to react to the closure.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Here\u2019s what they had to say:<\/p>\n

Emily Bell Rodriguez said she used the location to build her dream closet, using discounted “As Is” merchandise to bring a project she expected to cost $2,500 down to about $900.<\/p>\n
“I will miss you Mini Ikea!!” Rodriguez wrote. “I love the concept of this little one. RIP.”<\/p>\n
Belinda VanDyke also said she will miss the smaller location.<\/p>\n

IKEA will close its San Marcos store on November 1, 2026, about 14 months after the small-format location opened.<\/p>\n

“Noooo!! I love this location!!” she wrote. “Hate driving to Live Oak, traffic is terrible!”<\/p>\n

But others said the store never quite captured the IKEA experience.<\/p>\n
Julia Osborn was even more blunt about her experience.<\/p>\n
“This was the saddest IKEA location I have ever been to…,” Osborn wrote. “…It should have been a different experience.”<\/p>\n
She said the store felt like IKEA products placed into a space that did not have the same experience as the company’s larger stores.<\/p>\n

Jennifer Krueger visited with her teenage daughter and said it was “missing life.” She bought a stuffed shark and chocolate but said she would have been interested in the Swedish meatballs.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Brianne Corn said she never bothered visiting after learning the store did not have IKEA\u2019s cafeteria.<\/p>\n
“I am sure I would have made some kind of impulse buy had there been a food court,” she wrote.<\/p>\n
Then there were shoppers who apparently never knew the store existed.<\/p>\n

“We had an IKEA?” Dave Medrano wrote.<\/p>\n
“Wait what? We had an IKEA???” Tony Chapman added.<\/p>\n
Sherry Teeler said she believes the store could have done more to reach college students.<\/p>\n
“I still feel like this was a marketing problem,” Teeler wrote. “I have talked to many students who didn\u2019t even know it was there.”<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Lucy Morley said she was shocked by the closure.<\/p>\n
“…I literally used it like so many times so I’m not sure why it wasn\u2019t very popular,” she wrote.<\/p>\n

What happens next for San Marcos shoppers?<\/p>\n
IKEA said it decided not to renew its lease at San Mar Plaza and will close the San Marcos store November 1.<\/p>\n

For shoppers looking for an IKEA fix, nearby options include the company\u2019s stores in Round Rock and Live Oak, along with IKEA locations inside Best Buy stores in South Austin and Alamo Ranch.<\/p>\n
