{"id":44294,"date":"2025-11-11T03:49:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T03:49:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/44294\/"},"modified":"2025-11-11T03:49:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T03:49:07","slug":"struggling-texas-families-see-partial-snap-payments-amid-shutdown-nbc-5-dallas-fort-worth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/44294\/","title":{"rendered":"Struggling Texas families see partial SNAP payments amid shutdown \u2013 NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The proposed deal to reopen the federal government would fully fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, through next September.<\/p>\n<p>Some Texans began receiving partial SNAP benefits for the first time on Monday, after funding was paused this month due to the shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>NBC 5 spoke with residents in North Texas who said they are still living in uncertainty, waiting for their benefits and wondering if the partial amount will be enough to get by.<\/p>\n<p>At a South Dallas shopping center, a line stretched down the sidewalk as families and neighbors waited for a hot meal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re feeding the community today,\u201d said Mary Dudley, owner of Mary\u2019s Twisted Kitchen. \u201cAnd we said we\u2019re going to do 100 plates, but I\u2019m sure it\u2019s way over 100.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dudley said that during the last 41 days of the government shutdown, she\u2019s seen an increase in hunger in the neighborhoods near her Redbird Lane restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of people struggling right now, a lot of people,\u201d said Dallas resident Brian Grate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looks bad, and I\u2019m going to do whatever I can to help the community,\u201d Dudley added.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from federal workers whose paychecks have been paused during the shutdown, the SNAP food benefits stoppage has hit many North Texas families hard.<\/p>\n<p>More than 42 million Americans rely on SNAP assistance to access healthy food, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture paused payments on Nov. 1 due to the shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>Dallas resident Chyeminae Williams said her family relies on SNAP.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been kind of stressful,\u201d Williams said. \u201cWith two kids, trying to put food in the house, trying to make sure they\u2019re fed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An end could be in sight. On Sunday night, the U.S. Senate took the first step toward a deal to end the shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Texas Health and Human Services <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.texas.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/2025-federal-government-shutdown-benefits-faq.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">announced it had sent out<\/a> the first SNAP payments of November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSNAP clients who usually get their benefits between the 1st and 10th of the month will see partial benefits on their Lone Star Cards Nov. 10,\u201d the agency announced. \u201cFor SNAP clients who receive benefits on or after the 11th of the month, partial benefits will be issued on their normal issuance date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some North Texans on SNAP said the announcement was progress, but that challenges remain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe already don\u2019t get enough, so partial is just hard enough to make it try to stretch,\u201d Williams said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just hope they figure it out, man,\u201d said Brandon Jenkins. \u201cHolidays coming up, people relying on that, man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, families in need are turning to their community for help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want them to come, feel like they\u2019re not being judged, and just enjoy the food,\u201d Dudley said.<\/p>\n<p>Texas Health and Human Services has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.texas.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/nov-snap-monthly-allotment-partial-benefits.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">published a chart<\/a> showing how much SNAP recipients can expect to receive in their partial payments for this month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The proposed deal to reopen the federal government would fully fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP,&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":44295,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[15],"tags":[160,162,161,7951],"class_list":{"0":"post-44294","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-plano","8":"tag-plano","9":"tag-plano-headlines","10":"tag-plano-news","11":"tag-snap"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/44294","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=44294"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/44294\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/44295"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=44294"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=44294"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=44294"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
