The San Antonio Police Officers\u2019 Association is criticizing the Bexar County District Attorney\u2019s Office after learning prosecutors intend to dismiss charges against a suspect accused of shooting and wounding a San Antonio police officer during a SWAT operation in June 2026.<\/p>\n

In a press release, the association said the district attorney\u2019s office \u201chas decided not to file criminal charges against an individual who, according to clear bodycam evidence, repeatedly opened fire on SWAT officers attempting to serve an outstanding warrant.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis wasn\u2019t a minor encounter,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cOur officers were doing the job they were sworn to do, apprehending a wanted felon, when they were shot at.\u201d<\/p>\n

The association said Officer Mokrane was shot but \u201cthankfully did not suffer life-threatening injuries,\u201d adding, \u201cThe next officer targeted this way may not be as fortunate.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the statement issued on behalf of SAPOA President Johnny Perez, the association accused the district attorney\u2019s office of showing \u201ca lack of respect for the men and women of SAPD who put their lives on the line every day to protect the citizens of San Antonio.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot pursuing charges sends a dangerous message not only to our officers, but to the whole community,\u201d the statement said. \u201cIs the DA saying that criminals can shoot at police officers and face little to no consequence?\u201d<\/p>\n

The association also said, \u201cAccountability matters not only to our officers, but to the safety of our entire community,\u201d and concluded, \u201cThat is unacceptable, and we will not stand for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

On June 16, officers were attempting to serve a felony arrest warrant for 35-year-old Roman Xavier Pena when the suspect exchanged gunfire with the officers.<\/p>\n

The suspect was struck multiple times, and the SWAT officer was shot once in the leg.
