A Houston-area mother is mourning the loss of her 5-year-old daughter after gunfire struck the family\u2019s car in what authorities describe as an apparent road rage shooting.<\/p>\n
Zah\u2019Layah Walter was riding with her mother, Monica Hicks, and four siblings on Grant Road near Jones Road in northwest Harris County on Sept. 19 when another driver allegedly opened fire. Zah\u2019Layah was struck in the head and later died at a hospital. Two of her siblings were also injured by shattered glass.<\/p>\n
FOX 26 Houston<\/a> reported on the family\u2019s grief, sharing emotional footage from a vigil where Hicks remembered the final conversation she had with her daughter.<\/p>\n Hicks said Zah\u2019Layah had asked her whether she could have a Hot Pocket when they got home. \u201cThe last thing I said was, \u2018Yes,\u2019\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n According to Hicks, she did not immediately realize that her daughter had been shot. She described hearing what sounded like wind rushing past her before the vehicle\u2019s rear window shattered.<\/p>\n \u201cI did not know my baby was hit,\u201d Hicks said at the vigil.<\/p>\n The mother described Zah\u2019Layah as a happy, affectionate child who would tell strangers that she loved them. She also spoke about the difficulty of grieving while caring for her other children.<\/p>\n \u201cI wouldn\u2019t wish this pain on anybody,\u201d Hicks said.<\/p>\n Authorities have since arrested 47-year-old Jeremy Porter in connection with the shooting. He was booked into the Harris County Jail and charged with capital murder<\/a>, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. Investigators used automated license plate reader technology to help identify and locate the vehicle associated with the shooting.<\/p>\n Investigators have described the incident as an apparent road rage shooting, although Hicks has said she does not believe she or her family had any interaction with another driver that would explain the attack. She told ABC13 that she did not hear an argument or realize what had happened until she stopped and saw Zah\u2019Layah unresponsive.<\/p>\n The arrest gives Zah\u2019Layah\u2019s family a significant development in the case, but it does little to ease the grief of losing a child so suddenly.
