Flock cameras can capture a still image of a vehicle and license plate to be added to a large database including Texas law enforcement agencies and the FBI, according to League City officials.

The oversight committee would include three citizens appointed by city council members along with the mayor and city auditor. The members would review monthly or quarterly audit reports of the Flock system, consider public concerns and make recommendations about privacy protections and data security.

Sign up for the Hello, Houston! daily newsletter to get local reports like this delivered directly to your inbox.

“We haven’t had any problems here yet, but I think it’s important to get ahead of it, and I think it’s important to just show the citizens that we take data security seriously and we take privacy seriously,” League City Mayor Nick Long told Houston Public Media ahead of Tuesday’s meeting.

RELATED: Texas City police tighten oversight of Flock cameras after misuse

Long said the committee would ultimately ensure officers use the system appropriately and that Flock Safety properly handles and disposes of data. Long said the committee won’t have access to the actual Flock cameras or the system, but they’ll have access to the audit trail and be able to make sure the data is secure.

“I think there’s an important check and balance just to make sure that everybody knows that it’s not just us auditing ourselves that an independent group is also looking at it,” Long said.

Tuesday’s meeting includes a first reading and vote on the ordinance. If approved, the ordinance wouldn’t go into effect until after a second vote at the next council meeting on Oct. 13.

The future of Flock camera use in the city is up in the air. League City council members voted to add a proposition to the November ballot asking voters if the city should continue using automated license plate reader cameras on public roadways for law enforcement purposes.

Council members will make the ultimate decision, but Long emphasized the importance for council members to listen to the voters’ opinions in November.

According to the proposed ordinance, if the official results of the Nov. 3 election show that a majority of voters prefer to discontinue the city’s use of the Flock Safety system, the committee will automatically dissolve. If Flock cameras stay in place, the committee would continue.

The oversight committee would meet at least monthly for the first year, and the citizen members would serve staggered two-year terms, according to the proposed ordinance. Long said they’re looking for people with backgrounds in law enforcement and technology as well as concerned citizens to sit on the committee.

Sonia Kinyua/Houston Public Media Pictured is a Flock Safety camera at the intersection of Clay Road and Main…

[7
152130,39791,66476,45689,12597,56,58,57,865,22120,66,223,5373,100757,1225
post-444998","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-houston","tag-automatic-license-plate-readers","tag-cameras","tag-citizen","tag-flock-safety","tag-galveston-county","tag-houston","tag-houston-headlines","tag-houston-news","tag-law-enforcement","tag-league-city","tag-local","tag-news","tag-november-election","tag-oversight-committee","tag-public-safety
["GET
